Vietnam, US hold ministerial talks on reciprocal taxes

According to information from the Ministry of Industry and Trade , on the afternoon of May 16, in Jeju, South Korea, right after the end of the 31st APEC Ministerial Meeting on Trade (MRT 31), according to the pre-arranged plan of both sides, Minister of Industry and Trade, Head of the Government Negotiation Delegation Nguyen Hong Dien had a direct ministerial-level negotiation session with the US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer.

This is the first direct ministerial-level negotiation session between Vietnam and the US after the online negotiation session on April 12.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade said the negotiation session took place in a frank and constructive spirit, demonstrating the great efforts of both sides in building a stable economic , trade and investment relationship, harmonizing interests, commensurate with the Vietnam - US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Negotiations are also based on respect for sovereignty, autonomy, political institutions, balance of interests, and compliance with international law and the development level of each country.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer acknowledged and appreciated Vietnam's goodwill and initiative in actively preparing for negotiations between the two sides, and basically agreed with Vietnam's approach and proposals.

He said the US hopes that with the efforts of both sides, the technical-level negotiations in the coming days will achieve positive results, bringing practical benefits to the people and business community, contributing to stability and sustainable development in bilateral trade relations and the comprehensive strategic partnership.

The two Ministers reached high consensus on issues of principles, approaches, content orientation and negotiation plans, creating a basis for the next negotiation sessions to achieve positive results.

Previously, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang said that Vietnam has been proactively and actively promoting sustainable and balanced trade and investment cooperation with the US in the spirit of efficiency, frankness, constructiveness, equality, mutual respect and bringing beneficial results to both sides.

"Negotiations between Vietnam and the US on the US's reciprocal tax policy on Vietnamese exports are being implemented and specific information will be provided later," said Ms. Hang.
