Vietnam - US speed up negotiations on reciprocal trade agreement

(Dan Tri) - Vietnam and the US agreed on directions for handling remaining issues, promoting the early completion of the Reciprocal Trade Agreement, towards a balanced and sustainable economic relationship.

Information from the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that within the framework of negotiations on the bilateral agreement on reciprocal trade between Vietnam and the US, the ministerial-level negotiation session between Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien - Head of the Government's negotiation delegation and Chief of the US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, Head of the US negotiation delegation, took place on November 10 in Washington DC, USA.

Accordingly, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said the two ministers discussed and determined directions for handling major remaining issues, and spent time discussing bilateral trade relations.

Opening the negotiation session, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer summarized the work that both sides have carried out and highly appreciated the two countries' agreement on a joint statement on the Framework for a reciprocal, fair and balanced trade agreement, considering this an important basis for quickly promoting and completing the negotiation process.

The US Trade Representative also appreciated Vietnam's goodwill, systematic approach and problem-solving to the proposals made by the United States, and acknowledged the efforts and constructive spirit of the Vietnamese negotiating team. Mr. Jamieson Greer also responded frankly and quite positively to a number of Vietnam's proposals.

On the Vietnamese side, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien emphasized Vietnam's determination to build a balanced and sustainable economic and trade relationship with the US, and announced many measures that Vietnam has proactively implemented in recent times to promote bilateral trade exchanges.

The Minister said that the completion of the Reciprocal Trade Agreement will help further strengthen bilateral relations not only in the field of trade but also in many other fields, in line with the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

On that basis, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien made a number of proposals to help promote the negotiation process. In addition, the minister also suggested that both sides have a practical and flexible approach for the practical benefits of both sides.

The two ministers agreed that this negotiation session is very important to resolve outstanding issues in order to soon complete the reciprocal trade agreement that will benefit both Vietnam and the US.
