On the morning of November 21, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the Russian Academy of Sciences - Far East Branch held a workshop to introduce and evaluate the preliminary results of the second Vietnam-Russia joint survey trip on the Vietnamese continental shelf by the research vessel "Academician MA Lavrentiev."
This is a scientific activity of special significance, marking a new step forward in cooperation in offshore marine surveys between the Institute of Earth Sciences and the Pacific Oceanographic Institute named after Academician VI Il'ichev of the Russian Academy of Sciences - Far Eastern Branch (FEB RAS).
At the Workshop, scientists reported and discussed the preliminary results of the second Vietnam-Russia Joint Survey by the research vessel “Academician MA Lavrentiev.” The survey was carried out in complex weather conditions, but a large amount of work was still completed, clearly demonstrating the coordination capacity, professional qualities and dedication of the scientific teams of the two countries.
In particular, the survey team collected a large amount of deep-sea sediment samples on the continental shelf of Vietnam, supplementing the field data source in this area. The geological samples, geophysical and oceanographic data collected will be of important value for the research and comprehensive assessment of natural conditions, resource potential and the development process of the continental shelf area of Vietnam.
These initial results also demonstrate the pioneering role of the Institute of Earth Sciences in promoting interdisciplinary research on the sea and continental shelf, especially the scientific approach to deep sea areas - a strategic space for long-term research and development of Vietnam's marine economy.

Dr. Nguyen Xuan Anh, Director of the Institute of Earth Sciences, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, said the workshop not only presented initial results but also created a forum for scientists to discuss in more depth research potential, cooperation directions and future survey implementation plans.
In the coming time, the Institute of Earth Sciences will continue to adhere to key strategic orientations such as: Promoting interdisciplinary research programs on the sea and continental shelf, gradually expanding the scientific vision towards deep sea areas, where there is a lack of data but is of special importance for the country's long-term marine development strategy; continuing to improve observation and survey capacity with modern technologies; expanding the application of advanced data analysis methods; continuing to make practical contributions to the country's sustainable marine resource development programs.
In particular, international cooperation has always been an important pillar. In particular, maintaining joint survey trips, sharing data, exchanging experts and developing bilateral and multilateral research programs will continue to be a major driving force in the Institute's integration and development strategy.
From October 20 to November 21, 2025, the research vessel Academician MA Lavrientiev of the Russian Academy of Sciences - Far Eastern Branch (FEB RAS) coordinated with the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) to successfully organize and deploy the second joint scientific survey on the continental shelf of Vietnam.
The survey, which lasted more than a month of continuous work at sea, was attended by more than 30 scientists and technicians from Vietnam and the Russian Federation. The collected samples and data will be analyzed at specialized laboratories of the Institute of Earth Sciences, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (IES VAST) and the Pacific Oceanographic Institute (POI FEB RAS)./.
