Continuing the story of peace in the revolutionary countryside

Xuan Hoa Temple is located in Xuan Hoa village, old Hung Long commune (later Long Xa commune) and now Hung Nguyen Nam commune, Nghe An province. The temple is where the people's protest started during the Nghe Tinh Soviet movement; it is also the place where many historical events converge. Currently, this historical relic complex has become a "red address" to educate revolutionary traditions, so that future generations can continue to write the story of peace...

“Red Address” converges historical events

On the autumn days of August, visiting the historical - cultural relic of Xuan Hoa temple in a quiet, airy space, filled with incense smoke, Mr. Hoang Dang Hung (born in 1952), relic manager and keeper of Xuan Hoa temple, said: The temple was built in the 17th century in Yen Phu village, Long Cu commune, Phu Long canton, Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An .

The temple worships the village god and Cao Son and Cao Cac, two gods in folk beliefs who have contributed to protecting the country and helping the people.

During the resistance war, the temple was a gathering place for revolutionary cadres, the starting point for revolutionary masses to gather for demonstrations, and to hang the flag announcing the fight of the entire Hung Nguyen district at 3:00 a.m. on September 12, 1930.

In the book History of the Party Committee of Hung Long Commune (old), the historical event of September 12, 1930 was recorded: " Responding to the struggle movement of the people of Nghe Tinh, especially the demonstration of farmers in Nam Dan district on August 30, 1930 and September 6, 1930, comrade Le Xuan Dao, a representative of the Central Region Party Committee, chaired an expanded meeting with representatives of grassroots Party organizations, discussing measures to organize a large demonstration in the entire Hung Nguyen district on September 12, 1930. Comrade Nguyen Ngoc Ngoan, a party member in Xuan Hoa - Long Cu was appointed commander-in-chief. The Party flag was hung on the top of the driftwood tree of Xuan Hoa temple by comrades Nguyen Vy and Nguyen Hy, signaling the fighting order of the entire Hung Nguyen district.

The image of that high-raised flag called upon the working people to unite, creating great spiritual strength to fight against French colonialism and its puppet government, against high taxes and duties...

Mr. Hoang Dang Hung - relic manager and keeper of Xuan Hoa temple shared that he heard the elders in the village recount that: To prepare for the rally, according to the assignment of the Party cell, the Party members and the people cut down 3 old bamboo trees, connected them together to make a flagpole. The flagpole was connected to the top of an ancient driftwood tree in front of Xuan Hoa temple.

The red hammer and sickle flag was raised on the night of September 11 and early morning of September 12, 1930, flying, giving the order for a rally of 8,000 people in Hung Nguyen, Nam Dan...

The atmosphere of the rally was recorded in the History of the Party Committee of Hung Long Commune (old) as follows: “ At 3:00 a.m. on September 12, 1930, a large number of farmers from Phu Long commune and the surrounding area brought sticks, spears, ropes, and red flags with hammers and sickles to Xuan Hoa temple, then marched down to Yen Xuan station to tie up the station master and cut off the telephone wires to destroy the enemy's communication lines. Faced with the momentum of the demonstration, the French colonialists mobilized a team of soldiers to shoot into the air, demanding to disperse the demonstration, but the masses still marched in neat rows straight to the government office. When the group reached Thai Lao, the French colonialists sent planes to drop bombs on the crowd, killing 217 people and injuring 125, including 43 people from Phu Long commune.

According to documents from the Nghe Tinh Soviet Museum (now the Nghe An Museum - Nghe Tinh Soviet), the demonstration on September 12, 1930 attracted more than 8,000 people from Phu Long, Thong Lang, and Nam Kim communes. According to the plan, the masses gathered at Xuan Hoa communal house, went down to Yen Xuan station, and then marched to Hung Nguyen district headquarters to present their demands to the district chief. However, this demonstration was drowned in blood by the French colonialists and their henchmen.

On September 20, 1930, implementing the Party's policy, farmers from Xuan Hoa, Yen Tho, Thuan Duc, Nghia Son, and Yen Phu villages gathered at Xuan Hoa temple to hold a memorial service for those who died in the event on September 12, 1930.

From September 1930, the mass struggle movement changed with consecutive demonstrations with primitive weapons by farmers in many Nghe Tinh districts (Nghe An, Ha Tinh ), repeatedly attacking the district office.

The ruling government was in turmoil; French officials lived in a state of anxiety day and night, looking for shelter. From this struggle, the puppet government apparatus in many places collapsed, leading to the birth of the Soviet government.

In 1946 and 1947, the temple was a place for forging weapons and ammunition (Pham Hong Thai engineering workshop), then used as a food warehouse to serve the resistance war against the French.

From 1955 to 1964, the temple was used as a school for children of Hung Long commune (old); In 1964, during the resistance war against the US, the temple was damaged by enemy bombs, so the people dismantled it and used it as the commune and hamlet office. Some of the sacrificial objects were brought to the family's ancestral temple before that.

Later, the temple was restored and repaired, but unfortunately the ancient driftwood tree where the flag that called for people's support in the event of September 12, 1930 was hung no longer exists.

Right in front of the temple yard, a memorial stele was erected, clearly stating: “ This is the starting point of the revolutionary masses gathering to demonstrate, hanging the hammer and sickle flag on the banyan tree, signaling the struggle of the entire Hung Nguyen district at 3:00 a.m. on September 12, 1930. Xuan Hoa Temple was recorded in the history of the Nghe Tinh Soviet 1930-1931 led by the Communist Party of Vietnam ”.

During the school year, every week, the school assigns students to clean the temple campus.

But since 2025, this work will be carried out by the Youth Union of Hung Nguyen Nam Commune Police.
