In the context of a global aircraft shortage, Vietnam Airlines received a Boeing 787-10 that landed at Noi Bai airport on the morning of July 31 after a flight from the US to Vietnam. This event marked the milestone of Vietnam Airlines receiving the fifth Boeing 787-10, bringing the number of wide-body aircraft of the airline to 30. The Boeing 787-10 is one of the newest and most modern versions of the Boeing Group's wide-body aircraft "family". This is currently the largest passenger aircraft in Vietnam with a length of over 68m, a commercial payload of 56 - 60 tons and a maximum flight range of nearly 12,000km. The Boeing 787-10 has a configuration of 367 seats with 2 business class (24 seats) and economy class (343 seats), which will improve Vietnam Airlines' ability to supply seats to the market in the context of a shortage of aircraft in the domestic fleet. Wide-body aircraft are mainly operated by Vietnam Airlines on international routes between Vietnam and Northeast Asia, Europe, Australia, the US and on domestic routes from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, by July 2024, the fleet approved for operation in Vietnam was 195 aircraft, a decrease of 36 aircraft compared to the same period last year. Of which, the average number of aircraft in operation was 167, a decrease of 51 aircraft compared to the same period in 2023. The reason for the shortage of aircraft is that engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney has recalled PW 1100 engines of Airbus A321 NEO aircraft globally for inspection and repair, to fix manufacturing errors. Some Vietnamese airlines such as Pacific Airlines and Bamboo Airways have restructured and reduced the number of aircraft due to disruptions in the supply chain and human resources caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to a lack of engines, spare parts, and aircraft maintenance facilities. Therefore, the event of Vietnam Airlines receiving the Boeing 787-10 aircraft is of great significance in the context of the aviation industry lacking aircraft.
