For Dr. Van Schepler-Luu (Head of the Department of Plant Pathology and Host Plant Resistance, International Rice Research Institute - IRRI), his return to Vietnam in December 2022 to participate in the seminar " Science for Life" organized by VinFuture Foundation was a "bumper" trip.
On the sidelines of the event, the BioNET-Vietnam network was officially launched, gathering leading experts in the field of “treating” rice plants. The idea of this international network has been nurtured by Dr. Schepler-Luu for a long time, but it was only with the connection of the “midwife” VinFuture that it could become a reality.
Dr. Van Schepler-Luu shared at the talk show “Science for Life” within the framework of the 2nd VinFuture Science and Technology Week, 2022.
“ VinFuture is not only a platform for awarding prizes but also a place for convergence, exchange and establishing promising and practical cooperation relationships in the fields of agriculture in particular and science in general ,” Dr. Van Schepler-Luu assessed.
The scientist, who is working in the Philippines, said that as a Vietnamese, she is extremely proud of VinFuture. The award is a testament to Vietnam's belief and strong desire for science to serve humanity. The first two seasons of VinFuture were very successful as the winners were all outstanding intellectuals. The honored works were all studies that have influenced the lives of billions of people around the world.
Professor Tran Van Tho is one of the first three foreigners invited to work in the Economic Advisory Council of many generations of Japanese Prime Ministers.
From Japan, Professor Tran Van Tho, Honorary Professor at Waseda University, Tokyo, was particularly impressed with the surge in the number of nominated partners as well as the number of projects participating in VinFuture season 3.
The veteran professor assessed that VinFuture is increasingly gaining attention in the international scientific community because it shows its ability to discover the world's most outstanding scientists and choose to award works that directly contribute to improving human life.
According to him, these two characteristics are clearly demonstrated through the coincidence of this year's Nobel Prize in Medicine and the VinFuture Main Prize in 2021. VinFuture is even one step ahead of the world in its ability to select, evaluate and honor the work that saved tens of millions of lives during the pandemic two years ago.
“ This year, the number of partners nominating for the VinFuture Prize has increased more than four times compared to the first season and includes many of the world’s leading scientists. This affirms the growing prestige of the VinFuture Prize ,” said Professor Tran Van Tho.
Professor Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh (wearing a hat) on a business trip to Nepal. She is a leading professor of the Environmental Engineering and Management Program at AIT.
Explaining the strong influence and influence of VinFuture in the international scientific community, Professor Nguyen Thi Kim Oanh, Professor at the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT, Thailand) said that this is a major award, of global stature and with specific criteria.
“ VinFuture’s criterion of ‘Science serving humanity’ is very modern. Hopefully, the scientists receiving the awards will continue to excel in their noble mission of serving humanity, ” added Prof. Kim Oanh.
Inspiration for innovation in Vietnam
According to Professor Kim Oanh, at the Asian Institute of Technology, more and more researchers know about VinFuture, especially through the webinars that the Foundation has regularly organized in recent times. This is a series of academic activities to connect the world's leading minds with scientists and businesses at home and abroad. Through the discussion content, VinFuture also encourages the contribution and promotes the role of Vietnamese scientists in the global innovation chain.
“ Thanks to VinFuture, Vietnam is known as a country that values talent and cares about human issues on a global scale. Vietnamese scientists abroad know more about highly applicable fields in Vietnam and are more focused on the country, ” shared Prof. Kim Oanh.
As a young scientist, Dr. Nguyen Trong Hieu, Researcher, Senior Lecturer, Australian National University, also clearly sees the value of the VinFuture “bridge” in bringing the domestic and international research communities closer together. The award is also an invaluable source of inspiration for young people who love science, encouraging them to learn and research further. Thanks to that, VinFuture helps Vietnamese science develop and become more widely known in the world.
Dr. Nguyen Trong Hieu is currently a researcher and senior lecturer in Solar Energy at the Australian National University (ranked 34th in the world according to QS ranking 2024).
“ The success of VinFuture will enhance the reputation and international position of Vietnam’s science and technology in many aspects, especially improving the image of Vietnam as a leading country in promoting and supporting science and technology. From there, it will attract international attention, including attracting more investment in the field of research and development in Vietnam ,” Dr. Trong Hieu analyzed.
Agreeing with this view, Dr. Van Schepler-Luu assessed that the interest in science and technology not only reflects Vietnam's progress but also demonstrates its commitment to improving the quality of life and creating meaningful change for many people.
At the same time, VinFuture creates opportunities for international scientists to connect to better understand and have a more general and in-depth view of Vietnamese science as well as the research and development capacity of Vietnamese people. This exchange not only promotes international cooperation opportunities but also helps to enhance the position and reputation of Vietnamese science in the international arena.
“ Thereby, Vietnam is not only seen as an important partner in research and development but also as an inspiration for creativity and innovation ,” Dr. Van Schepler-Luu shared from the Philippines.
The Global Innovation Index 2023 report released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) on September 27 showed that Vietnam has increased by 2 places compared to 2022, ranking 46/132 countries and economies. WIPO assessed Vietnam as one of 3 countries with outstanding achievements compared to its development level.
Dr. Nguyen Trong Hieu is currently a researcher and senior lecturer in Solar Energy at the Australian National University (ranked 34th in the world according to QS ranking 2024).
According to experts, the increase of 2 ranks in the difficult trend after the Covid-19 pandemic shows that Vietnam has made strong and correct investments in terms of policies and mechanisms for scientists so that they can make worthy contributions and be recognized by the world. And it is not difficult to recognize the mark of VinFuture in this promotion.
“ The VinFuture Prize is effective in stimulating creative research in Vietnam when information about research achievements at the forefront of world science is disseminated and the most prestigious scientists come to receive the prize right in our country ,” said Professor Tran Van Tho.
