At The Open Championship , the final major of the season, Scottie Scheffler continued to write his own script. After round 2, he led the leaderboard with a total score of -10.

Behind, only Matt Fitzpatrick (-9) with Brian Harman and Li Haotong (-8) chasing.

From there it's a chasm: Rasmus Hojgaard, Tyrrell Hatton, Robert MacIntyre, Harris English and Chris Gotterup are all at -5.

Rory McIlroy is now -3. Bryson DeChambeau had a great day with a 6-under-par to make the cut, but Brooks Koepka and Collin Morikawa (both +7) bowed out early.

Rain poured down at Royal Portrush as the golfers competed. This affected the golfers' performance greatly. Many missed birdie and even eagle opportunities.

There, Scheffler emerged as the world 's No. 1 golfer – who has won three PGA Tour titles since early May, including the major PGA Championship.

Scheffler birdied the first hole to boost his spirits. Then he made a hat-trick of birdies on holes 5-7.

Entering the next 9 holes, the American golfer had 4 more birdies and made a bogey at hole 11. He finished the second day with 64 strokes (-7), taking sole lead after half of The Open 2025 – a score of -10 strokes.

“Scottie is expected to come out and dominate , Fitzpatrick said of Scheffler. He’s an outstanding golfer .

“Scottie is the world number one, and we are seeing Tiger Woods-like performances. I think the pressure is on him to win the tournament,” Fitzpatrick stressed.

Scheffler's brilliance did not discourage Fitzpatrick – the hope of the UK.

After opening with a 67, the 30-year-old golfer shot 66 on the second day. He finished 9-under after 36 holes and emerged as a challenger for the 2025 Open title.

Fitzpatrick 's first PGA Tour win came at the 2022 US Open, beating Scheffler (and Will Zalatoris). He hasn't won since the RBC Heritage, so he's eager to conquer Royal Portrush in front of a Northern Irish crowd.

Li Haotong, a phenomenon from China – of the same generation as Scheffler and Fitzpatrick – and Brian Harman are close behind at the top of the list.

Li’s PGA Tour career has been anything but stellar. He’s either competing for The Open title or at least the highest placing in a major – his best finish was T16 at the 2018 US Open.

Between the rain and wind, DeChambeau had a completely different day than his opening round. The “ Scientist ” shot 65, just enough to make the cut – the same as Jon Rahm and Hideki Matsuyama.
