The highlight match of round 9 of the 2024-25 Premier League ended with a 2-2 draw between Arsenal and Liverpool.
Man City and Chelsea both won comfortably at home. Tottenham and Man Utd both lost away from home, against Crystal Palace and West Ham respectively.
Salah saves Liverpool again
Without William Saliba and Martin Odegaard, Arsenal still dominated Liverpool at home, especially in the first half. Liverpool needed Mohamed Salah to shine to leave Emirates Stadium with 1 point.
The Egyptian striker met Nunez's pass to equalize 2-2 for Liverpool in the 81st minute. This was the 11th time Salah has scored against Arsenal in the Premier League. Only two players have scored more goals against the Gunners than Salah: Harry Kane (14 goals) and Wayne Rooney (12 goals).
After the first 9 matches of the season, Salah has contributed to 11 goals for The Kop, including 6 goals and 5 assists.
Mohamed Salah equalized 2-2 for Liverpool.
Man City takes the top spot
Facing only Southampton in the relegation zone, Man City dominated the game and had 22 shots. Erling Haaland scored early in the 5th minute, ending a 3-match scoreless streak.
Haaland’s creator was Matheus Nunes. The Portuguese midfielder has four assists this season, all of which have been for Haaland. If he had been more careful, Man City could have scored at least two more goals from Savinho and Mateo Kovacic.
Despite the narrow win, Man City still earned maximum points. Pep Guardiola's team officially took the top spot from Liverpool, 1 point ahead of The Kop.
Haaland scored to help Man City get 3 points.
Weak Man Utd
Man Utd created many chances against West Ham, but hit the crossbar 3 times. In the second half, when they could no longer dominate their opponents, Erik Ten Hag's students conceded 2 goals and left the London stadium empty-handed.
In the 2024-25 season, Man Utd had an expected goals (xG) of 14.6, but only scored 8 goals, a difference of -6.6 goals. This is worse than any team in the Premier League this season.
Man Utd also has the second worst attack in the league, only better than Southampton, Crystal Palace (6 goals). In all competitions, Man Utd has won 1 of the last 8 matches, reaching a rate of 12.5%.
Man Utd missed many opportunities, lost 1-2 to West Ham.
Nicolas Jackson progresses, Chelsea benefits
Chelsea won by a minimal margin against Newcastle in round 9, in which Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer were the 2 players scoring for the home team. Jackson officially reached the milestone of 20 goals for Chelsea after 44 matches. Only 4 players achieved this achievement faster than Jackson: Diego Costa, Cole Palmer, Hasselbaink and Mark Stein.
With Jackson and Palmer shining, Chelsea have won 10 of their last 14 Premier League games. Only Man City have played better than Chelsea in the same period.
Ipswich Town disaster
Ipswich defender Harry Clarke just played the worst match of his career against Brentford. In the 45+1 minute, this player scored an own goal to help the opponent equalize 2-2. Right at the beginning of the second half, Clarke pulled the player roughly in the penalty area, causing Ipswich to receive a penalty. On the 11m mark, Mbeumo scored to make it 3-2. Clarke ended his poor performance with a red card in the 69th minute and left the field.
In Premier League history, only one player has scored an own goal, made a mistake leading to a penalty and received a red card in the same match: Jan Bednarek (vs Man Utd, 2021). Harry Clarke is the second to do this.
Harry Clarke deserves to be the worst player of round 9 of the 2024-25 Premier League.
Chris Wood is about to catch up with Haaland
Chris Wood is currently the third-highest scorer in the Premier League 2024-25 with 7 goals. Last weekend, he scored 2 goals to help Nottingham Forest beat Leicester 3-1 away.
Once considered a "wooden leg" player, Chris Wood has played brilliantly under coach Nuno Santo. Since the Portuguese coach arrived at Forest (December 2023), Chris Wood has scored 16 goals (excluding penalties). In the Premier League, only Erling Haaland has scored more goals than Chris Wood (18 goals - excluding penalties).
