Resolutely prevent illegal fishing

QTO - On the afternoon of November 11, Comrade Hoang Nam, Member of the Provincial Party Standing Committee, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Head of the Provincial Steering Committee for Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, chaired a meeting of the Provincial Steering Committee for Combating IUU Fishing. Attending were members of the Steering Committee and a number of related units. The meeting was connected online to communes, wards, and special zones with fishing vessels in the province.

According to the report of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, up to now, the whole province still has 122 fishing vessels that are not qualified to operate. All fishing vessels that are not qualified to operate are registered, identified and sealed by the People's Committees at the commune level, assigned officers to supervise, and are not allowed to operate in the aquatic resource exploitation. Border guards have increased inspection and control of fishing vessels entering and leaving the port, resolutely not allowing this group of vessels to leave the port to exploit aquatic resources.

At sea, the Department of Agriculture and Environment continues to be on duty 24/7 to monitor and supervise the activities of 100% of fishing vessels through the fishing vessel monitoring system. When detecting fishing vessels operating near the border and losing VMS connection near the border with other countries, the officers on duty notify, warn and contact the ship owner and captain to request to turn on the VMS device and not let the fishing vessel cross the permitted boundary for exploitation at sea.

At the meeting, delegates focused on discussing solutions to combat illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing in the province in the coming time.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Hoang Nam, Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, highly appreciated the efforts of departments, branches, units and localities in implementing the direction of the Government and the Provincial People's Committee on combating IUU fishing in recent times.

The Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Hoang Nam, requested the functional forces and localities to focus on reviewing the activities of fishing ports, making plans to invest in infrastructure, and upgrading fishing ports to meet standards. The Department of Agriculture has a plan to transform the livelihoods of coastal people in accordance with each subject, each locality and the province's fisheries development planning. Communes, wards and special zones continue to monitor and seal fishing vessels that are not qualified to operate at sea; propagate fishermen to comply with regulations on combating IUU fishing, and absolutely not to cross the border when exploiting seafood at sea. For fishing vessels that have enough documents but are still stuck with administrative procedures, relevant units need to speed up the progress to complete the procedures for fishermen to go offshore and develop the economy .
