After receiving his doctorate from the Institute of Interdisciplinary Information Studies at Tsinghua University (China) in June, Zhang Linfeng was appointed by Shanghai Jiaotong University (China) as an assistant professor and thesis advisor for graduate students at the age of 27.
Currently, Truong Lam Phong's main research direction is Efficient AI, including large language models, generative models of video images, and AI dataset compression and acceleration. To date, Lam Phong has published 20 papers in leading international academic journals with more than 2,000 citations. He is also a reviewer at prestigious academic conferences such as: NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, CVPR, ICCV.
Most of Lam Phong's research works are considered to have contributed to the progress of basic artificial intelligence research. Specifically, in 2019, Lam Phong proposed the "knowledge distillation" algorithm. Professor Kuk-Jin Yoon of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology commented that this algorithm has outstanding advantages because of its good generalization ability and high efficiency.
Associate Professor Han Sung of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) also praised this algorithm: "The research results of Lam Phong not only have theoretical value but also bring many practical applications such as: Multi-perspective image detection, object segmentation, image generation and simultaneous video super-resolution, deploying technology applications in business operations".
Before joining Shanghai Jiaotong University, Lam Phong received offers from companies with a salary of 1 million USD/year (more than 25 billion VND). Sharing with The Paper , Lam Phong revealed the reason for joining Shanghai Jiaotong University's Institute of Artificial Intelligence because he wanted to focus on scientific research and teaching.
“For me, scientific research is an interesting job, in which a good supervisor plays an important role. When I was studying at Tsinghua University, my supervisors guided me on a clear research path, so I want to do the same for students at Shanghai Jiao Tong University by creating a comfortable research environment for them,” Dr. Lam Phong shared.
When sharing about the attention he has received on Chinese social media in recent days, Lam Phong said: “Artificial intelligence is a new field and young people will be the key force in research. In fact, universities now have many young lecturers like me. Therefore, I am not worried about taking on this position. As a researcher, I feel uncomfortable being noticed because of my youth. In the future, I hope to be known more for my research achievements.”
