'Wirtz did not destroy Liverpool's midfield'

Coach Arne Slot has responded after Arsene Wenger said Florian Wirtz "broke" Liverpool's midfield structure.

Florian Wirtz is struggling to integrate with Liverpool.

The Dutch coach affirmed that all changes in the squad come from the personnel situation, not because of the 115 million pound contract.

Former manager Arsene Wenger previously commented on beIN Sports that Wirtz “unbalanced Liverpool” by being favored to play in the No. 10 position. He said Slot's placement of Wirtz in the attacking midfield position forced Szoboszlai to leave his preferred position, affecting the system that helped Liverpool win the title.

According to Wenger - who used to lead Arsenal, only when Wirtz was moved to the wing in the match against Real Madrid, Liverpool regained their familiar rhythm.

In response to this comment, Arne Slot immediately responded: “Wirtz needs time to adapt. His teammates also need time to understand his style of play. Lately, he has been playing on the left, but I am sure Wirtz will continue to shine in the midfield role for Liverpool. Maybe not today, but soon.”

The Dutch coach confirmed that the rotation of the squad was entirely due to injuries and lack of force: “Gravenberch missed the first two games, Mac Allister missed the entire pre-season, Frimpong and Bradley were injured. I was forced to make changes. I don’t want to disrupt the system, but sometimes there is no other choice.”

Slot also cleverly criticized Wenger's commentary style: "Everyone has the right to an opinion. But if I needed heart surgery, I wouldn't tell the doctor how to do it. In football, everyone thinks they know best."

The 47-year-old strategist believes Wirtz will still prove the value of the "blockbuster" contract from Bayer Leverkusen: "He has the talent to succeed in England. But success does not come from just one individual. It is important that the whole team finds him at the right time, in the right position."

Slot said Wirtz is being used in the familiar role he has seen at Leverkusen and Germany, as a left-sided striker in a 3-4-3 system: “My job is to help him move into the right areas around the 16.50 meter box. When Wirtz is there, he always creates something special.”
