Irrigation water reaches Suoi Lach field

Suoi Lach field (Va Ly village) has an area of nearly 3 hectares. Previously, people grew wet rice in this area, but then had to abandon it due to lack of irrigation water. In 2024, from the capital of the National Target Program on Socio -Economic Development for Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2025 period, Cam Lam District Project Management Board was assigned as the investor to upgrade, repair, and dredge the Suoi Lach weir system with a total cost of nearly 1.2 billion VND. About 625m of irrigation canals have been renovated, upgraded, and dredged. Thanks to that, irrigation water has reached Suoi Lach field, people have water to produce rice. In 2024, 30 households with rice fields here produced 2 winter-spring and summer-autumn rice crops with high yields, bringing joy to local people.

Mr. Mang Minh (Suoi Coc village) said that his family has 900m2 of land here. When the irrigation system reached the field, his family replanted rice after a period of abandonment. Each crop, he harvested about 650kg of rice. In addition to growing rice, Mr. Minh also takes care of 2ha of cashew; raises cows and pigs to increase income, so the family's economic life is gradually stable. Mr. Minh hopes that the State will continue to pay attention to investing in upgrading the Suoi Lach dam to a higher level to have enough irrigation water to meet the production needs of 3 rice crops/year.

Effective in crop conversion

In recent times, people in Son Tan commune have also converted ineffective crops to high-value crops such as mango, durian, custard apple, etc. In 2024, 36 households in the commune were supported to convert crops with an area of 296,591m2 . Of which, 29 households converted to mango, 2 households converted to cashew, and 5 households converted to durian. According to Mr. Mang Du - Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Son Tan commune, to "take short-term to support long-term", households also intercropped banana trees, bringing stable income to people.

The family of Mr. Mau Duong Si (Va Ly village) is one of the households that has effectively converted crops. With 9,000m2 of land given by his parents, he and his wife grow cashews to develop the economy. Thanks to hard work, from a poor household in the locality, his family rose out of poverty in October 2010. After that, growing cashews was no longer effective, so in 2024, he switched to growing 500 banana trees. About 1 year after planting, the banana garden began to yield harvests. During the Lunar New Year 2025, his family harvested more than 300 banana stands. After deducting expenses, his family earned about 110 million VND. In addition, twice a month, each time he collects 2-3 quintals of banana leaves, selling them at 6,000 VND/kg to earn extra income. Thanks to implementing effective economic models and converting suitable crops, Mr. Si's family has a stable life.

Up to now, there are still 3 poor households and 21 near-poor households in the commune. In the coming time, the commune will continue to support people in converting ineffective crops to crops with high economic value, suitable to local conditions and soil. At the same time, replicate effective economic models to help people escape poverty sustainably.
