Thach Yen commune proactively responds to heat wave, ensuring production progress

Entering summer, the heat and intense heat cover the entire northern provinces, making farming work more difficult. The outdoor temperature sometimes reaches 39 - 40 degrees Celsius, significantly affecting the progress of agricultural production. Faced with this challenge, farmers in Thach Yen commune (Cao Phong) have come up with many solutions to cope with the weather.

Farmers in Thach Yen commune (Cao Phong) actively go to the fields to take care of the summer-autumn rice crop.

As one of the localities with a tradition of agricultural production in Cao Phong district, farmers in Thach Yen commune are still working hard in the fields, proactively adapting to ensure production according to plan, season and expectations. In recent years, the weather has become increasingly extreme and unpredictable. Particularly in early May, many consecutive days of strong heat have significantly affected the production progress of local farmers. Dry fields, dry ponds, people are forced to change their working habits, switching to working earlier, taking long lunch breaks, and rotating shifts. However, the harsh sun is still a big challenge for farmers.

Ms. Bui Thi Kim Oanh, a resident of Dai hamlet, Thach Yen commune, said: To avoid the heat affecting the production progress, we usually go to the fields early and return home when the sun starts to get hot. The afternoon work also starts later. After planting, I often go to the fields to check the water level, because if the fields are left dry, cracked, and lacking water, the newly planted rice will easily die.

Like Ms. Oanh, many households in Thach Yen commune took advantage of the early morning to go to the fields to plant rice on time. However, in the recent hot days, the high temperature caused some rice fields in the highlands to suffer from local drought. The process of taking care of rice immediately after planting was also affected because fertilization had to be slowed down. Not surrendering to the weather, Thach Yen farmers proactively changed their production methods to adapt. Working hours were flexibly adjusted, machinery was brought in to support heavy stages such as land preparation, water pumping, transportation, etc. Last year, the whole commune planted 353 hectares of rice, with an average yield of 5 tons/ha, and a total output of 1,755 tons.

Currently, although the weather has not caused significant damage to production, if the heat continues, it will significantly affect crop productivity and quality. In this situation, the Farmers' Association of Thach Yen commune has recommended that people keep water in the fields for rice fields that have been planted and are about to be planted. For sown areas, it is necessary to pump water deep into the fields during the day and drain it at night. In addition, because the crop season often has storms, people need to clear the system of intra-field canals, joints, and culverts to be ready to drain water when flooding occurs. The commune will also actively promote technology transfer, instructing people to apply water-saving irrigation models, and plant short-term varieties to avoid damage if the heat continues.

In reality, hot weather makes farming more difficult and production costs increase, but that does not mean that people neglect their fields. With proactive and flexible actions, the fields in Thach Yen are still lush. The fields that have just been harvested in the spring have been plowed, preparing to sow the summer-autumn crop. Some areas of short-term vegetables show clear results in both productivity and quality.

On the sunny fields, the working atmosphere is still bustling. No one complains, no one abandons their fields. Farmers here understand that: the harvest will not wait for anyone, and the future of family meals is decided by today's sweat. With self-reliance and creativity, Thach Yen farmers are maintaining the production rhythm every day, waiting for a bumper harvest.
