Alonso retired from playing for Bayern Munich at the end of the 2016-2017 season, then went to study at the UEFA Elite Coaching Course. In the summer of 2018, while studying with some of his fellow Spaniards such as Raul Gonzalez, Xavi, Victor Valdes, Joan Capdevila, he returned to Real Madrid - where the former midfielder played from 2009-2014 - to coach the U14 team. In the summer of 2019, Alonso moved to Sociedad - another former team where he started his professional career - to coach the reserve team.
The young coach's three-year success at Sociedad has made him sought after. He was linked with Monchengladbach in March 2021, but chose to stay at Sociedad for another season, before accepting the job of Leverkusen in October 2022, replacing his predecessor Gerardo Seoane. When Alonso took over, Leverkusen were still struggling near the bottom of the table, facing the risk of relegation. But in a short time, Bayer transformed, finishing sixth in the Bundesliga last season and winning the title five rounds early this season.
