Mr. Do Van Ke in Tan Phong commune (Ninh Giang) is one of the first people to raise banana fish in Hai Duong . After 6 years of investment and construction, Mr. Ke's family now has 6 acres of fish for meat and 1 acre of banana fish for breeding.
According to Mr. Ke, to get rich on his homeland, he traveled to many places, learned about many new fish breeds, consumer markets and decided to raise banana flower fish. "I saw that the demand was quite large while the supply was limited, the fish on the market were mainly imported from China. Therefore, I decided to invest in raising this type," said Mr. Ke.
After a period of raising, Mr. Ke has evaluated the effectiveness of the banana fish. According to him, this type of fish can be raised up to 20 - 30 fish/ m2 , 10 times more than traditional fish such as grass carp, bighead carp...
The time, effort, and cost to raise 1 kg of flower banana fish is equivalent to traditional fish, about 45,000 VND, but the selling price is much higher. Currently, flower banana fish is sold for 70,000 - 80,000 VND/kg, sometimes up to 90,000 VND/kg; the profit is 26,000 - 30,000 VND/kg, higher than grass carp and bighead carp, which cost 16,000 - 20,000 VND/kg.
Realizing the increasing demand for raising banana fish from people inside and outside the province, Mr. Ke has coordinated to breed fish on an area of 1 hectare and imported more fish from a number of other facilities. In 2024, he will supply the market with over 10,000 fish.
As for Mr. Le Thanh Phuoc's family in Quang Phuc commune (Tu Ky), raising banana fish is many times more economically efficient than other types of fish. Mr. Phuoc said: "When the fish are ready to be harvested, there are people who deposit to buy them. The consumption market is not only in the province but also in other places such as Hanoi, Hai Phong... In 2024, my family will sell 50 tons of fish to the market, earning a profit of 1.5 billion VND, 3-4 times higher than other types".

Banana fish began to appear in Hai Duong around 2018. At that time, facing the increasingly scarce natural fish resources due to polluted living environment, some people proactively invested in experimental farming of this fish breed.
There are currently no exact statistics, but the whole province has about 30 households raising banana flower fish in the districts of Ninh Giang, Thanh Mien, Nam Sach, Gia Loc... Mr. Do Van Ke added that recently many customers both inside and outside the province have ordered banana flower fish seeds with the quantity of more than ten thousand fish, double the same period last year.
After 3 years of raising banana fish, Mrs. Pham Thi Sim's family in Ngu Hung commune (Thanh Mien) has evaluated the economic efficiency of this fish breed. In addition to the 2.7 hectares of pond they are raising, in the coming time, Mrs. Sim will continue to look for land to rent to expand the farm to raise this type of fish.
According to some farmers, the banana fish is quite suitable for the climate and soil conditions of Hai Duong. Compared to traditional fish breeds, banana fish is easy to raise, less susceptible to disease, only encountering some problems such as ulcers in the spring or liver and kidney diseases in the summer. However, if disease prevention is done well by using probiotics to periodically clean the water, the fish can develop stably, without disease outbreaks. This fish species can be raised flexibly in ponds, cages or cement tanks. The fish meat is delicious, firm, and rich in nutrients.
Flower banana fish is not only an attractive dish in daily meals but also a favorite in high-class restaurants and hotels. Developing flower banana fish into a valuable commodity product is completely feasible in Hai Duong.
