On November 17, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vinh Long province coordinated with the Provincial Women's Union and the People's Committee of Binh Minh town to organize a Culinary Contest and a performance to set a Vietnamese record for preparing 102 dishes from and served with tofu.
This is an activity within the framework of the first Red Brick and Ceramic Festival - Green Economy Program of Vinh Long province in 2024, taking place from November 16-23.
At the contest, 20 teams competed to prepare dishes and drinks with diverse colors and flavors from the main ingredient of tofu skin from the tofu skin production village of My Hoa commune, Binh Minh town, Vinh Long province.
As a result, the Organizing Committee awarded the First Prize to the Women's Union of Long Ho district.
In particular, on this occasion, the Representative of the Vietnam Record Council presented the official decision to establish the Vietnam Record with the content "The event of processing and performing 102 dishes from tofu skin and served with tofu skin for the first time in Vietnam" (with the main ingredient from My Hoa tofu skin, Binh Minh town, Vinh Long province) to the People's Committee of Binh Minh town.
Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vinh Long province Nguyen Xuan Hoanh said Vinh Long is famous for the tofu making village in My Hoa commune, Binh Minh town.
The craft village with more than 20 households producing tofu skin, daily produces more than 3 tons of various products such as large tofu skin pieces, soft tofu skin, dried tofu skin strands...
The main ingredient for producing tofu is made from clean soybeans, without chemicals, so the tofu product is very nutritious. Dishes made from My Hoa tofu, Binh Minh town are very diverse, not only in rustic meals, vegetarian meals but also on the menu of luxury restaurants.
In 2013, "My Hoa - Binh Minh Tofu Skin" was recognized as a collective trademark by the Department of Intellectual Property.
In 2017, “My Hoa – Binh Minh Tofu Skin” won the award for typical product of the Mekong Delta.
In 2023, the My Hoa - Binh Minh tofu making profession was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and included in the list of National Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Nowadays, the tofu craft village is also a tourist attraction that attracts visitors to witness the production process of delicious and attractive tofu pieces, and listen to the locals tell stories about the formation and development of the craft village.
Mr. Nguyen Xuan Hoanh said that the culinary competition and the first record setting of Vietnam with 102 dishes made from tofu skin and served with My Hoa tofu skin - Binh Minh town is an opportunity to honor the artisans who are dedicated to their profession, contributing to the preservation of traditional craft villages of the locality. This is an opportunity to introduce the typical cuisine of Vinh Long province in general and of Binh Minh town in particular, attracting the attention of tourists through cuisine.
Through the contest, we create a useful playground, create conditions for exchange and promote creativity for those who love cuisine, an opportunity for chefs to demonstrate their creativity, act as a "Culinary Ambassador", and convey the values of local cuisine to friends across the country and internationally./.
