Grapefruit production area of Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan's family in Bui village, Cam Thach commune.
Starting from November every year, the grapefruit garden of Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan's family in Bui village, Cam Thach commune has many customers coming to buy. These are not traders with large consumption capacity but are owners of clean food stores, mini supermarkets and local people. It is not easy for his family's Dien grapefruit and green-skin grapefruit products to be popular while the grapefruit growing area in the area is quite large.
Mr. Tuan said: "My family has about 500 Dien and green-skin pomelo trees, with an output of about 20 - 30 tons/year. Pomelos are now very diverse in types and quality, but with cultivation according to VietGAP standards, in harmony with nature, my family's products have made a difference. Although the price is 15 - 20% higher than the market price, it is still always trusted and chosen by customers."
Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan's family's 2-hectare grapefruit growing area has just applied VietGAP production standards without paying attention to registering for quality certification from specialized agencies and introducing and promoting products on the market. Therefore, in 2024, he established Thach Tien Cooperative to promote and build a brand for grapefruit in particular and the farm's agricultural products in general. At the same time, he linked a number of households in the same field to organize production according to VietGAP standards to create quality agricultural products large enough to meet market demand. Currently, when grapefruit products on the market are sold for 15,000 - 20,000 VND/kg, the cooperative's grapefruit products are sold for 35,000 VND/kg, customers still choose to buy, there are times when supply cannot meet demand.
Chairman of Cam Thach Commune People's Committee Ha Thanh Son said: "Currently, there are about 100 hectares of fruit trees in the area. However, the number of concentrated production areas is not much. Therefore, the commune actively promotes to help people understand the importance and benefits of building brands and trademarks for fruit tree products. At the same time, it guides organizations and cooperatives to build brands for fruit tree products and key crops of the commune associated with traceability of goods. In addition, through mass organizations, the commune also encourages cooperatives, garden owners, and farms with quality fruit tree products to participate in exhibitions and introductions at trade promotion activities and fairs in and outside the province."
According to statistics, Thanh Hoa province currently has about 25,000 hectares of fruit trees, with main fruit varieties such as grapefruit, orange, guava, dragon fruit, pineapple... Total annual fruit output is about 315,000 tons. However, only about 400 hectares of oranges and grapefruit of farms, cooperatives and production investment enterprises are certified to produce according to VietGAP standards. The whole province has 7 fruit tree production areas including grapefruit, lychee, dragon fruit, banana, jackfruit with growing area codes. This ratio is too small compared to the total fruit tree area of the whole province.
Along with that, most fruit products are freely consumed in the market, the economic efficiency has not been as expected. In response to this reality, the agricultural sector has instructed localities and producers to focus on registering quality standards and protecting intellectual property rights. The province and localities are also actively attracting investment in deep processing of fruit products to increase product value as well as the effectiveness of using the trademarks of the granted products. Currently, in the province, there are a number of fruit products protected by intellectual property rights such as Nhu Xuan oranges; Tho Xuan grapefruit, Van Du oranges, Ba Thuoc tangerines... consumed in the market with higher value and economic efficiency than similar products.
In order to maintain the brand and trademark of fruit trees, the agricultural sector and localities have actively promoted and introduced fruit trees that meet the standards and quality of the specialized sector and built models of linkage, cooperation in production and consumption of products according to the value chain. Along with that, localities also orient and encourage people to develop specialized areas for concentrated fruit tree production in the direction of VietGAP, GlobalGAP, Organic... to improve product quality, contribute to increasing economic value, meet the increasingly high demands of the market and gradually conquer the export market.
