Heartbreaking family situation where both husband, wife and young child have cancer

At the Department of Internal Medicine 1, Nghe An Oncology Hospital, branch 2, when asking about Mr. Ngo Xuan Tuyen, born in 1975 in Tho Son hamlet, Tho Hop commune, Quy Hop district, from the medical team, doctors to the patients being treated here, everyone knows and sympathizes with his family's situation. Sitting by the hospital bed taking care of her husband, Ms. Truong Thi Chung, born in 1986 (Mr. Tuyen's wife) choked up with tears: "It's already hard for other people to have a sick person in their family, my family has a child with cancer, I myself have cancer, now my husband also has cancer...".

In 2006, Ms. Truong Thi Chung and Mr. Ngo Xuan Tuyen got married. The couple had no jobs, their economy only depended on a few acres of contracted rice fields, when the farming was off, they looked for hired work to make ends meet. They had 3 children, the first son was Ngo Xuan Hieu (born in 2007); the second daughter was Ngo Thi Hong Linh (born in 2013); the third son was Ngo Gia Hung (born in 2018). With many children, the couple worked hard, encouraged each other to work hard so that their children could study properly.

The desire for a normal life was not easy at all, since the incident happened to the family. Ngo Gia Hung, when he was 27 months old, unfortunately fell, then had symptoms of blood in the urine. The couple immediately took him to the doctor, who said he had a tumor in the kidney, diagnosed as malignant. Taking him to the National Children's Hospital for a re-examination, the doctor concluded that Hung had stage 4 kidney cancer with lung metastasis, and had to undergo surgery to remove one kidney to maintain his life. Hearing the news that their son had cancer, the couple hugged their son and cried...

To have money to pay for the surgery for his son, Mr. Tuyen left his wife at the hospital to take care of the child, and he returned home to borrow money to pay the hospital fees. After the surgery, Hung received radiation therapy according to the regimen to avoid metastasis. From 2020 until now, Hung has been periodically taken by his mother to the National Children's Hospital for check-ups. With Hung's condition, in addition to treatment according to the regimen, the doctor also prescribed additional supplements to support his health.

It has been more than 5 years since Hung got sick, Chung's family's economy is almost exhausted as the amount of money borrowed from relatives and friends is getting bigger and bigger. Meanwhile, Chung and her husband often have to take time off work to take turns at the hospital to take care of their child.

What no one could have expected was that in early 2023, while taking Hung to Nghe An Oncology Hospital for a follow-up examination, Ms. Chung took the opportunity to check her health and discovered that she also had kidney cancer. Just like her youngest son, Ms. Chung also had to undergo surgery to remove a kidney, otherwise there would be very dangerous complications. Her son had cancer, now her wife had cancer. When he heard this news, Mr. Tuyen, who was originally very strong, collapsed, but he still encouraged his wife to try to get treatment. To have money to cover the treatment costs for his wife and children, Mr. Tuyen worked day and night, earning every penny. He was not afraid of any job, no matter how hard it was, and only hoped that both mother and child would soon recover so that the family could be together.

Sadly, the cruel fate struck again. In April 2025, Mr. Tuyen had a bad cough and sore throat. Although he took medicine, it did not go away, so he went to the doctor and was diagnosed with stage 4 esophageal cancer. When the disease became serious, he had to be hospitalized at Nghe An Oncology Hospital due to his poor health.

“A few years ago, every time the mother and child went to the hospital for a check-up, Tuyen was always there to support and take care of them. Now he himself has cancer and is being treated at the hospital. After nearly a month of fighting the disease, his health, which was already weak, is now even paler, and his weight is now only 46kg. Even though he is lying in a hospital bed, he always thinks about his wife and children. He said that now the property in the house has no value anymore, the bank, relatives, friends, and neighbors have all borrowed money for treatment, now he alone can endure, living day by day, but for the mother and child, they must try to overcome it” - Ms. Chung emotionally recounted.

Regarding Tuyen's condition, the doctors said they are continuing to monitor him before giving him radiotherapy. His family was already in a difficult situation, now both he and his wife and their child have cancer; the situation is extremely tragic. While his parents are in the hospital for treatment, the first son, who is in 12th grade this year, and the second daughter, who is in 6th grade, have to rely on the help of relatives. Gia Hung has kidney cancer, in addition to being treated in the hospital, he is also in 1st grade.

Sympathizing with the situation of Mr. Ngo Xuan Tuyen and his wife, Mr. Nguyen Viet Binh - Head of Internal Medicine Department, Nghe An Oncology Hospital, Branch 2, said: "This is a special patient of the department, both husband and wife and their child have cancer. The family's situation is difficult. On the part of the department, the ward, and the hospital, we will try to help the patient as much as possible."

Mr. Truong Van Hoan - Chairman of Tho Hop Commune People's Committee said: Mr. Ngo Xuan Tuyen's family in Tho Son hamlet is in a very difficult situation. Recently, the local government has coordinated with agencies and benefactors to visit and encourage the family. However, the family's situation is difficult, both the couple and Hung have serious illnesses. Moreover, the children are currently studying, if there is no help and sharing from the community and benefactors, the children's studies are at risk of having to stop halfway... We hope that the community will share and help Mr. Tuyen's family to gradually overcome difficulties!
