The play " Xuan Huong Nu Si" by the Hai Phong Cheo Troupe has just been released, scheduled to be performed at the beginning of the year at the Hanoi Opera House, as well as at the capital's theater festival next March. The play was ordered by the Hai Phong Department of Culture and Sports to be directed by People's Artist Trinh Thuy Mui, President of the Vietnam Stage Artists Association.
"Queen of Nom poetry" Ho Xuan Huong returns to the Cheo stage
People's Artist Thuy Mui said that at first, upon order, she would re-stage the play Ho Xuan Huong according to the script that the Vietnam Cheo Theatre staged in 1987.
However, when researching documents and reading historical books about poetess Ho Xuan Huong, she realized that the perception of this poetess had changed a lot. Recreating the 1987 script would make the Cheo version no longer attractive. Therefore, People's Artist Thuy Mui and the Hai Phong Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism decided to order author Nguyen Duc Minh to write a completely new script.
A jealousy scene in the play shows the injustice of "sharing a husband"
The scriptwriter of Xuan Huong, Nguyen Duc Minh, born in 1980, spent 4 years as a researcher in China, and is very knowledgeable about Han and Nom characters. In this script, Duc Minh has selected from the vast poetic heritage of Ho Xuan Huong poems that bear her mark, and can be combined together to clearly recreate the portrait of this "Queen of Nom poetry". In addition, the scriptwriter's understanding of parallel prose has brought many flexible performances.
According to People's Artist Thuy Mui, the play " Xuan Huong Nu Si" has 5 scenes corresponding to 5 turning points in the life of Ho Xuan Huong. The adaptation of the script into Cheo melodies by People's Artist Minh Thu is both familiar and unique. Hai Phong Cheo artists had a hard time rehearsing the play because they had to memorize many difficult poems and lines.
Poet Xuan Huong has some difficult to remember lines.
The main role of Ho Xuan Huong in Xuan Huong Nu Si was given to actress Thuy Duong, a new talented face of Hai Phong Cheo Troupe, a student of People's Artist Thuy Mui. This actress said that this is a difficult role with the actress having to sing and talk continuously.
Thuy Duong herself was also under psychological pressure because she was overwhelmed by the role of Ho Xuan Huong, previously played by People's Artist Van Quyen of the Vietnam Cheo Theatre. However, People's Artist Thuy Mui said she was satisfied with her student's performance in the play Xuan Huong Nu Si .
