At the working session of Government members with leaders of Vinh Long and Ben Tre provinces on October 9, Mr. Nguyen Truc Son - Permanent Vice Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee, informed that the province is preparing to organize the ceremony to export the first batch of fresh coconuts to China.
According to Mr. Nguyen Truc Son, coconut trees bring high economic value and play an important role in the local agricultural economy. Access to the large potential market of China is a very favorable condition for the sustainable development of coconut growing areas in the Mekong Delta and the province. Ben Tre alone currently has about 80,000 hectares of coconut (accounting for about 42% of the coconut area of the whole country and about 88% of the coconut area in the Mekong Delta), with an output of about 708 million fruits.
In recent times, the province has focused on building concentrated production areas and developing value chains for the province's key agricultural products. To date, Ben Tre province has 133 coconut growing areas registered for export to China, with more than 8,379 hectares and 12,831 participating households in Giong Trom, Chau Thanh, Binh Dai, Ba Tri, Mo Cay Bac districts and Ben Tre city. These growing areas are mainly drinking coconuts and have basically met the conditions for registering for export growing area codes to the Chinese market.
Ben Tre's coconut processing industry consumes about 85.7% of the province's total coconut output, with about 180 enterprises and nearly 2,400 establishments producing and processing a variety of coconut products. Ben Tre's coconut products are now present in the markets of more than 90 countries and territories. The value of coconut production and processing in 2023 will reach 3,750 billion VND, and the coconut export turnover in 2023 will reach 420 million USD, accounting for 27.45% of the province's total export turnover.
Coconut trees are identified as one of the six key national industrial crops, according to Decision No. 431/QD-BNN-TT of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on approving the Project on Developing Key Industrial Crops to 2030. On that basis, the People's Committee of Ben Tre province has developed the Project on Developing Key Industrial Crops (coconut trees) to 2030 with the goal of promoting the inherent strengths of coconut trees, continuously improving productivity, quality and economic efficiency of coconut gardens. On August 19, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam and the General Department of Customs of China signed three protocols on exporting Vietnamese agricultural products to the Chinese market. Of which, fresh coconut is one of the three official products officially exported to this billion-people market.
