Fruit and vegetable exports expected to exceed 8 billion USD by 2025
The turnover in the first 10 months is estimated to exceed 7 billion USD, up 14.4% over the same period last year. According to VINAFRUIT, the results achieved are not only due to increased output but also thanks to the change in quality and export methods. Previously, most of Vietnam's vegetables and fruits were exported in fresh form, depending on the season, but now the proportion of deeply processed products, packaged according to standards and refrigerated is increasing rapidly. With the current growth momentum, the Association forecasts that this year's vegetable and fruit exports can completely exceed 8 billion USD, setting a new record for Vietnam's agricultural industry.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of VINAFRUIT, said: “The Association just conducted a market survey in China in early October. The leader of Tan Phat Dia wholesale market in Beijing assessed that Vietnamese durian has good quality and still has a lot of room for growth. China's demand for many types of Vietnamese fruits is still high, but we need to continue to ensure quality, traceability and food safety standards to maintain a sustainable market share.”
Besides China, the United States and South Korea are the next two largest markets with proportions of 7.5% and 4.4% respectively. Notably, fruit and vegetable exports to the United States increased sharply by nearly 60%, while those to South Korea decreased slightly by 1.3%. Among the 15 largest export markets, Malaysia increased the most with 66.3%, while Thailand decreased the most, by 51.5%.
After durian, Vietnamese grapefruit became the center of attention when it was officially allowed to be exported to China this year. This is an important milestone, opening up a great opportunity to increase the turnover of fruits and vegetables and affirm the Vietnamese fruit brand on the world map. Not only China, Vietnamese grapefruit has also been exported to Australia, marking a new step in the strategy of diversifying markets and expanding presence in developed countries.
According to Mr. Nguyen, opening up more types of fruits such as grapefruit, passion fruit, coconut, processed mango, pineapple and banana contributes to enriching the product structure, helping the fruit and vegetable industry not to depend too much on a single product or market.
