At the regular press conference of May 2025 of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment , held in Hanoi on June 3, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Phung Duc Tien said that the seafood export turnover in the first 5 months of 2025 reached 4.11 billion USD, an increase of 15.1% over the same period in 2024.
Regarding the market, the functional units of the Ministry continue to handle issues to facilitate seafood exports to markets such as China, the US, Japan, the European Union (EU), while opening new markets with great potential such as Islamic countries, the Middle East, Africa, etc.
In addition, in the context that Vietnam will perfect the two-level local government, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment is proposing to amend and supplement legal documents with decentralization, delegation of power and administrative reform, creating favorable conditions for people and businesses, creating momentum for industry development, completing growth and export targets - Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien shared.
After impressive growth in the first months of the year, Vietnam's seafood exports in May 2025 showed signs of slowing down, reaching only 851 million USD, up 2.7% over the same period last year - the lowest increase since the beginning of the year. However, the cumulative export turnover in the first 5 months of the year still reached more than 4 billion USD, reflecting the efforts of the whole industry to overcome difficulties in the context of a "stormy" market.
Deputy Secretary General of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) Le Hang said that in order to adapt to global trade fluctuations, many seafood enterprises have redefined their market strategies towards diversification and increased deep processing. Exports to markets supported by the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans- Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) such as Japan, Canada, and Mexico continued to maintain strong growth, reaching 224 million USD in May (up 7.9% over the same period in 2024) and more than 1.15 billion USD in 5 months (up 24.3%). Notably, the Japanese market increased dramatically in May to 836 million USD (up 546% over the same period), showing the ability to boost product consumption through large orders and tariff incentives.
The Chinese and Hong Kong (China) markets also recorded impressive growth, reaching nearly 185 million USD in May and more than 900 million USD in 5 months, up 22.3% and 48.6% respectively. This is a positive signal for restructuring efforts. market, while demonstrating the appeal of products that suit taste, price and convenient supply chain.
The shift in product structure is a bright spot in the picture of Vietnam's seafood exports. Deeply processed products with high added value, such as breaded pangasius, processed squid, or frozen octopus, etc., all recorded strong growth, reflecting the trend of meeting the needs of convenient and high-end consumers in large markets, showing that Vietnamese enterprises are shifting to invest heavily in processing technology and diversifying products to increase competitiveness. This not only helps increase turnover but also reduces dependence on volatile traditional markets.
To maintain the growth momentum of seafood exports in the coming time, VASEP recommends that businesses continue to be cautious when exporting to the US market, and need to calculate reasonable delivery times to avoid tax risks and not lose orders. In unfavorable conditions, it is necessary to restructure the market more drastically.
In the long term, the seafood industry needs to take advantage of the network of FTAs that Vietnam has signed and implemented with more than 60 countries and economies to expand its market, while upgrading infrastructure, investing in traceability, reducing logistics costs, and increasing the ability to meet international standards. Authorities also need to have credit policies, support farming areas, and invest in processing to increase the competitiveness of the entire industry.
