Yen Son is a mountainous commune in Thanh Son district, currently home to 1,780 households with 7,800 inhabitants, of which over 85% are ethnic minorities, distributed across 12 administrative areas. Over the years, thanks to the attention of various levels of government and relevant agencies, the Party committee, the local government, and the people of the commune have focused resources on effectively implementing Program 135 – sustainable poverty reduction. As a result, the local socio -economic situation has seen many positive changes, and the lives of the people have been increasingly improved and enhanced.

Yen Son strives to escape poverty.

The model of combining fruit tree cultivation with livestock farming provides a stable income for Mr. Nguyen Dang Huu's family.

Returning to Trai Yen area, we noticed that the rural landscape had undergone many positive changes, with the inter-district road now paved with concrete. New, spacious houses nestled among lush fruit orchards stand as evidence of a prosperous new life. Comrade Nguyen Thai Son, Head of Trai Yen area, stated: Currently, Trai Yen has 44 households with 215 inhabitants. Following the government's policy, the people in the area have boldly shifted their crop structure to fruit tree cultivation, and the average income per person has now reached over 20 million VND per year. As a result, many households have escaped poverty; currently, the area only has 3 poor households and 5 near-poor households.

In recent years, Yen Son commune has restructured its agricultural sector towards increasing commodity value, economic efficiency, and sustainable development; exploiting the potential and advantages of each area and village. The commune has promoted propaganda and support for people to change the crop structure, develop livestock and poultry farming, aquaculture, and forestry; apply scientific and technical advancements, and increase production value per unit of cultivated land. The commune currently has about 60 hectares of Dien pomelo, of which 42 hectares are already producing fruit; nearly 370 hectares of tea, with 147 hectares already producing fruit, yielding over 1,600 tons. Taking advantage of the hilly and forested areas, many households have invested in livestock farming, bringing high economic value. Currently, the total number of buffaloes, cows, goats, and pigs in the commune has increased to over 7,500, and the number of poultry and waterfowl is over 65,000.

On his family's more than 2,000 square meters of hillside land, Mr. Nguyen Dang Huu in Trai Yen area boldly converted the entire area to planting perennial fruit trees, combined with beekeeping and raising chickens and pigs. After nearly 10 years of investment, care, and production following safe agricultural practices, Mr. Huu's family's integrated farming model has yielded a stable income of over 100 million VND per year.

In addition, the commune has focused on developing small-scale handicraft production, services, and trade. Currently, the commune has 5 cement brick factories, 2 wood processing factories, 10 carpentry and furniture factories, 9 mechanical workshops, etc. Outstanding loans from the Agricultural and Rural Development Bank amount to 87 billion VND, and from the District Social Policy Bank over 65 billion VND, meeting the production capital needs of business households and enterprises in the area.

In poverty reduction efforts, the commune also focuses on job placement for workers and creating conditions for poor households to access policy-based capital. In 2024, 12 workers from the commune went abroad for employment. Each year, the commune collaborates with various units to open 5-10 vocational training classes and provide technical training in farming and livestock raising for the people; it encourages people to develop the local strengths to expand the area for planting fruit trees such as oranges, pomelos, and lemons, thereby creating jobs for hundreds of workers; the rate of trained and certified workers reaches nearly 70%. As a result, many households have risen to develop economically, escaped poverty early, and reduced the poverty rate in the entire commune to 19% and the near-poverty rate to 14%.

Comrade Nguyen Van Thang, Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen Son commune, said: "Yen Son commune will continue to focus on raising awareness among the people to proactively develop their internal resources, strive for economic development, and escape poverty. Associations and organizations will continue to coordinate with the District Social Policy Bank to effectively implement credit programs. Attention will be paid to advising and supporting people in effectively using loan capital to develop their economy, stabilize their lives, and achieve sustainable poverty alleviation."
