Request for verification and handling of Nestlé Milo case advertising product 'clinically tested by the Institute of Nutrition'
According to the Food Safety Department, recently, the Department has received feedback about Nestlé Milo products having advertising content related to clinical trial reports of the Institute of Nutrition.
Pursuant to regulations, on May 16, the Food Safety Department sent a dispatch to the Dong Nai Department of Health requesting to inspect, verify information, and handle the advertising of this product according to current regulations.
At the same time, this unit also issued an official dispatch requesting the Institute of Nutrition to urgently inspect and review the communication and advertising content of Nestlé Milo products to ensure compliance with the provisions of Decree 15/2018/ND-CP of the Government detailing the implementation of a number of articles of the Law on Food Safety and implementing Directive 17/CT-TTg dated May 9, 2017 of the Prime Minister on strengthening the effectiveness and efficiency of state management and rectifying advertising activities.
Previously, on April 21, the Institute of Nutrition sent a document to Nestlé Vietnam requesting that the company check and review the communication and advertising content of food products. If there is any information related to the Institute of Nutrition that violates regulations, it should be immediately removed to ensure strict compliance with the provisions of the law in communication activities, product advertising as well as dissemination of nutritional knowledge to the community.
According to the Institute of Nutrition, in 2022-2023, the Institute cooperated with Nestlé Vietnam Company Limited to implement the scientific research project "Effectiveness of physical education combined with the use of Nestlé Milo barley milk supplement on the nutritional status, physical strength and mental strength of students at some primary schools in Ninh Binh province".
The research topic was conducted from June 2022 to March 2023 as a randomized controlled trial in the community on 576 primary school students in Ninh Binh (300 children in the intervention group and 276 children in the control group) at two primary schools, Truong Yen and Ninh Giang, Hoa Lu district, Ninh Binh.
The study design was a community-based randomized controlled trial to evaluate the effectiveness of physical education combined with the use of barley milk supplement on the nutritional status, physical strength and mental ability of students at two primary schools, Truong Yen and Ninh Giang, Hoa Lu district, Ninh Binh.
The Nestlé Milo barley milk supplement product used in this study was self-declared by Nestlé Vietnam Company Limited in 2020 at the Dong Nai Food Department and is currently allowed to circulate on the market.
This research topic has been accepted by the Council for the results of implementing basic science and technology tasks.
The conclusion of the scientific research topic is as follows:
Physical activities according to the curriculum and the combined use of the supplementary food product "Nestlé Milo Barley Milk" for primary school students did not show any improvement in the nutritional status of students after 3 months of research.
Physical activities according to the curriculum and combined use of the supplementary food product "Nestlé Milo Barley Milk" for primary school students contributed to improving physical qualities such as speed, strength, endurance, flexibility and dexterity of primary school students after 3 months of research.
The Institute of Nutrition also requested Nestlé Vietnam Company Limited to report on the progress of implementation, review communication and advertising activities related to the Institute of Nutrition, and proactively make adjustments to comply with legal regulations.
