UGT said the lawsuit seeks to prove an employment relationship between Jota, a political content creator, and YouTube because he regularly provides his services and receives advertising revenue.

Google Spain blocked Jota's YouTube channel "Último Bastión" (The Last Bastion) from earning ad revenue since August. He said the company had removed money that had been in his YouTube billing account.

“We consider this a severance of the employment relationship,” said his lawyer, Bernardo Garcia. Mr Garcia said they had asked the court to consider Jota’s employment relationship with YouTube, and to consider the “wrongful dismissal”.

Jota's channel features left-wing political satire videos that often use feeds from official channels like parliament and city hall. He adds subtitles and special effects to support his points.

Google said content creators are not employees and in this particular case, Jota's channel did not comply with YouTube's monetization policies.

The first hearing in the case is scheduled for June 26, 2024, in a Madrid court.
