1/3 of students taking the 10th grade entrance exam at a Quang Binh testing site got zero points.

After the Department of Education and Training of Quang Binh province announced the results of the entrance exam for grade 10 public high schools for the 2023-2024 school year, many people were surprised by the score sheets of candidates at some testing sites, mostly below 2 points.

At the Hoa Tien Secondary and High School exam site (Minh Hoa district, Quang Binh), out of a total of 149 students taking the 10th grade entrance exam, 51 candidates failed (accounting for more than 30%), mainly in English, and the scores on the 10th grade entrance exams were also very low.

Mr. Tran Van Dong, Principal of Hoa Tien Secondary and High School, said that this year the school was assigned by the Department of Education and Training to enroll 4 10th graders with a total of 180 students. However, the school only received 149 applications for the exam and admission, which means that candidates only need to not have a failing score to be admitted to 10th grade.

"The school has not yet finalized the benchmark scores, but it is expected that nearly 100 students will pass the first round. The remaining students will be asked for guidance from the Quang Binh Department of Education and Training to recruit more," he said, adding that this is not the first time the percentage of students failing the 10th grade entrance exam has been high. Because the school is located in a difficult border district, English has not been given much attention.

Located in Minh Hoa district, at the 10th grade entrance exam site of Minh Hoa High School, the exam results were mostly below 5 points. Of the 354 candidates taking the exam, 246 achieved an English score of 2 or lower, of which about 20% had a failing score.

A representative of Minh Hoa High School said that this year's 10th grade entrance exam scores are not unusual compared to previous years, but the scores tend to be lower and lower. Low entrance scores also create difficulties and pressure for the school, teachers will have to spend time tutoring and training to improve the quality of students.

A representative of the Quang Binh Department of Education and Training said that some schools with low 10th grade entrance exam scores this year are mainly in border districts, disadvantaged areas, and are mainly inhabited by ethnic minorities. This situation has been going on for many years and is also a concern for the provincialeducation sector.

Especially in English, about 30-40% of candidates in disadvantaged areas got a failing grade or a grade of 1-2. The reason is that the students' learning conditions are still difficult, although teachers try their best and find many solutions to support them. On the other hand, families do not pay enough attention to this subject, leading to students' neglectful learning at home.
