In November 2023, durian exports increased by more than 480%

According to the General Department of Customs, in November 2023, Vietnam's durian exports reached 90.908 million USD, down 73.9% compared to October 2023, up 16.3% compared to November 2022. In total, in the first 11 months of 2023, durian exports reached more than 2.1 billion USD, up 480.3% over the same period last year.

Regarding the market, fresh durian exports to the Chinese market in November 2023 reached 82.14 million USD, down 74.8% compared to October 2023, up 37.2% compared to November 2022. In general, in the first 11 months of 2023, durian exports to this market reached more than 1,971 billion VND, up 1,515.1% over the same period last year.

Along with the Chinese market, in the first 11 months of 2023, fresh durian exports to the Czech market increased by 28,195.4%; durian exports to the Papua New Guinea market increased by 837.6%; durian exports to the US market increased by 282.8%; durian exports to the Canadian market increased by 222%; and durian exports to the French market increased by 32%.

However, some markets also recorded a decrease in export growth compared to the same period last year, including Hong Kong (China), Taiwan (China), and Japan.

With the achieved results, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association - said that it is forecasted that durian export turnover in 2023 could reach a record of 2.2 - 2.3 billion USD, 5 times higher than in 2022 and 10 times higher than in 2021.

According to the Plant Protection Department ( Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development ), Vietnam's fresh durian is currently exported to 24 markets. As for frozen durian, there are also 23 export markets. In addition to China, which is the main market accounting for 90% of the total fresh durian exports, other markets still have room to focus on development.

Statistics from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development show that in 2010, the country had 92 thousand hectares of durian, but now it has increased to 131 thousand hectares. The average annual growth rate of the country during this period is 24.5%. This year's durian output is estimated at over 1 million tons, an increase of 15.9% compared to 2022. In the Central Highlands alone, the durian area is currently over 57 thousand hectares, with an output of over 394 thousand tons.

To date, the General Administration of Customs of China has granted Vietnam 422 codes for growing areas and 153 codes for durian packing facilities. For the durian industry to grow and develop sustainably, it is necessary to have the cooperation and support of all localities, organizations and individuals participating in the durian production and export chain to build the reputation and brand of the durian industry in the international market.
