TPO - A group of about 2,000 migrants have just begun their journey on foot from the southern border of Mexico in the hope of reaching the north of the country and eventually the United States. Their journey begins just weeks before the US presidential election, in which immigration is one of the most concerned issues.
Joel Zambrano, a Venezuelan, believes the new US administration could end the online asylum interview appointment system, known as CBP One.
“That’s what scares us. They say that could change because they could close CBP One and all the migrant assistance services that are available right now,” he said.
A lack of jobs in southern Mexico due to an influx of foreigners and delays in asylum appointments in the United States have caused large groups of migrants to leave the region over the past month.

The group that set out on October 20 was the third and largest since the administration of Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum began her term. She has yet to make any changes to immigration policies set by her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Two groups of 800 and 600 migrants have left the area since early October. An estimated 40,000 migrants are stranded in southern Mexico.
