2 Vietnamese students won gold medals at the 'most difficult chemistry exam on the planet' Mendeleev Olympics

The Ministry of Education and Training has received official information about the results of the Vietnamese team at the 59th Mendeleev Olympiad (IMChO). All 4 participating students won excellent medals, including 2 gold medals and 2 silver medals.

The 59th International Mendeleev Chemistry Olympiad took place from May 5 to 12 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The Vietnamese high school student delegation had 4 contestants, all 4 of whom won medals, 2 gold medals and 2 silver medals.

Winning gold medals were Tran Trung Kien, a 12th grade student at Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, Hanoi (169.25 points) and Nguyen Ngo Duc, a 12th grade student at Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, Nghe An province (151.05 points).

Silver medals were won by Dinh Trong An, a 12th grader from the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi (149.70 points) and Tran Hoang Nam, an 11th grader from the Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, Hanoi (136.65 points).

The Mendeleev Olympiad is a leading international project of Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Andrey Melnichenko Foundation (Russian Federation) to support and develop talented young people. It is considered one of the most prestigious and challenging academic exams in the field of chemistry for high school students, often referred to as "the most difficult chemistry exam on the planet".

In 2025, the exam will gather 192 candidates from 40 countries and territories, including countries with strongly developed chemistry education such as China, Russia, Korea, Japan...

Among the 19 students who won gold medals at IMChO 59, Russia had 10 students, China had 3 students, Uzbekistan had 3 students, Vietnam had 2 students, and Hungary had 1 student.

The Vietnamese high school student team competing in IMChO 59 was selected from the regional and international Olympic team selection exam in 2025. The University of Science, Vietnam National University, Hanoi was assigned by the Ministry of Education and Training to host the training and organize the delegation to participate in the exam.
