Bau Duc and Hoang Anh Gia Lai are about to have a bumper durian crop.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group (HAGL) is about to harvest the first crop of more than 26,000 durian trees in Laos. According to HAGL Chairman Doan Nguyen Duc, about 200-300 hectares of this area are expected to yield fruit in October-November.

Bau Duc - HAGL Group is about to harvest the first crop of more than 26,000 durian trees in Laos.

According to Mr. Duc, each durian tree will produce 20-30 fruits, each fruit weighs 2-4 kg, the total durian output is estimated at about 2,000 tons, equivalent to a yield of 6.7-10 tons/ha. This figure is similar to the durian harvest yield of HAGL in Gia Lai last year.

Revenue from durian is expected to reach about 200 billion VND, with the selling price in Laos estimated at about 100,000 VND/kg, because the selling price of off-season durian can be 50% higher than the main harvest.

Fruit business, especially durian, is becoming the main revenue contributor for HAGL. Mr. Doan Nguyen Duc once said: HAGL's cost of durian production is very low, HAGL can sell durian in any way to make a profit.

Durian sales in Laos could reach trillions of VND by 2025

According to Mr. Duc, the company is currently focusing on building a business plan for 2025, when durians will begin to be harvested on a large scale, with a record contribution for this year. The largest durian growing area in the Bolaven Plateau, Laos, is harvested off-season (from October to November). If the whole year of 2024 is included, the company will harvest 300-400 hectares of durian, including the growing area in Vietnam, 10 times higher than in 2023. HAGL currently owns the world's largest durian farm in Laos.

HAGL leaders said that the harvest output in the next crops could increase more strongly, with 60-80 fruits per tree. Durian sales in Laos in 2025 could reach trillions of VND.

It is known that in 2024, HAGL aims for a revenue of VND 7,750 billion - a record high in its history of operations, including VND 5,540 billion from fruit trees, VND 1,550 billion from banana-eating pigs and VND 660 billion from revenue from other products and goods. Profit after tax is expected to reach VND 1,320 billion (excluding unexpected factors). Mr. Duc aims to plant an additional 500 hectares of durian, bringing the total area to 2,000 hectares.

Hoang Anh Gia Lai has placed high expectations on the durian sector in the second half of 2024.

With net profit in the second quarter of 2024 increasing 3.4 times compared to the same period last year, HAGL has now reduced its accumulated loss to below VND1,000 billion. Contributing to the majority of HAGL's revenue (74%) in the second quarter was the fruit segment, up 98% over the same period.

HAGL has placed high expectations on the durian sector in the second half of 2024. HAGL is following the 2 trees, 1 pig model, and all 3 products: pigs, durians and bananas are being evaluated as doing well.

Mr. Doan Nguyen Duc informed that with these 300 hectares about to be harvested, the company expects to have revenue of hundreds of billions of VND. By 2025 - 2026, this figure will reach thousands of billions of VND. It is expected that by 2025, revenue from durian in Laos can bring HAGL thousands of billions of VND, thanks to the scale of the world's largest durian farm with an area of up to 1,200 hectares.

Concerned about the possibility of durian "bumper harvest but low price" or competition with Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines, and China, Mr. Doan Nguyen Duc assessed that the market demand is very large. Currently, the durian supply of Southeast Asian countries for the Chinese market only meets more than 10% of the country's population.

It is known that in terms of financial situation, HAGL's asset scale as of June 30 was 21,560 billion VND, a slight increase of more than 600 billion VND compared to the beginning of the year. The large proportion in the asset structure is in receivables, fixed assets and unfinished construction costs.
