31 people poisoned after eating Phuong bread in Hoi An

On September 13, Hoi An City Medical Center (Quang Nam province) reported the initial preliminary results of the investigation, monitoring and handling of the food poisoning case in the city.

The inspection team of the Quang Nam Provincial Department of Health and the Provincial Food Safety and Hygiene Department inspected and took samples at Phuong bakery.

According to Hoi An City Health Center, on the afternoon of September 12, after receiving information that 5 people in a family were poisoned after eating Phuong bread (No. 2B Phan Chau Trinh Street, Minh An Ward, Hoi An City), the City Health Center established a food poisoning investigation team to obtain initial information, and at the same time actively and urgently investigate and handle the case.

Phuong bread is famous in Hoi An.

Through information exploitation, the initial investigation team recorded that not only the 5 people above were poisoned by eating Phuong bread, but also many others were being treated at several hospitals in Quang Nam and Da Nang (Thai Binh Duong Hospital - Hoi An, Hoi An Medical Center, An Cuong Clinic - Hoi An, Hoan My Da Nang Hospital).

As of 6 p.m. on September 12, the team recorded a total of 31 people poisoned by eating Phuong bread, of which 5 were treated as outpatients, the rest were being treated at the above hospitals.

The inspection team of the Quang Nam Provincial Department of Health and the Provincial Food Safety and Hygiene Department inspected and took samples at Phuong bakery.

Most of the patients had symptoms of high fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, and frequent and prolonged loose stools. The patients' meal times were scattered from 8:00 a.m. on September 11 to 8:00 p.m. the same day. The interval between the onset of symptoms and the time of eating was at least 2 hours and at most 16 hours (incubation period from 2-16 hours). According to the statements of the above people, they all ate Phuong bread.

Many tourists coming to Hoi An often go to Phuong bread to enjoy.

During the initial investigation and handling process, the food poisoning investigation and monitoring team monitored and inspected the above-mentioned facility. At the time of monitoring, the team requested the facility to keep relevant food samples and seal and preserve the samples according to regulations to send to the provincial Food Safety and Hygiene Department for testing to determine the cause of food poisoning.

Previously, as reported by Nguoi Lao Dong Newspaper , on September 12, on his personal Facebook page, Mr. NDH (born in 1992, residing in Hoi An City) posted an article stating that his family of 5 people ate banh mi at a famous shop in Hoi An, of which 4 were hospitalized, the remaining person had a stomachache. Mr. H. requested the authorities to check the food safety and hygiene quality here.

According to the leader of Hoi An City People's Committee, while waiting for verification results, the authorities have requested Phuong bakery to temporarily suspend operations.

It is known that Phuong bread is a very famous shop, not only locals but also many tourists from many countries around the world when coming to Hoi An come to enjoy this dish.
