37/39 foreign PhD graduates want to return to Vietnam to teach

39 PhDs, including 37 who graduated abroad, applied to teach at schools under Ho Chi Minh City National University.

Accordingly, the University of Technology has the largest number of candidates with 24 people, followed by the University of Natural Sciences with 11 candidates, the University of Economics and Law with 3 candidates and the University of Health Sciences with 1 candidate.

The candidates are PhD graduates from prestigious training institutions around the world such as: Keio University (Japan), University of Virginia (USA), National University of Singapore (Singapore), RWTH Aachen University (Germany), University of Bologna (Italy), Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (Australia), Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (Germany), Sorbonne Paris Nord & CEA Saclay University (France), Korea, Taiwan, Canada, Hungary, Russia, Australia, Thailand and Denmark.

Many people have outstanding achievements in scientific research with dozens of prestigious international articles, typically: Dr. Ho Hoang Phuoc (RWTH Aachen University - Germany and University of Bologna - Italy): 72 international articles; Dr. Nguyen Thanh Nho (University of New Caledonia - France): 62 articles; Dr. Nguyen Kim Chung (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology - Australia): 42 international publications; Dr. Mai Thanh Tam (Kyoto Institute of Technology - Japan): 37 articles; Dr. Truong Trung Kien (University of Texas at Austin - USA): 36 articles.

They want to return to Vietnam to teach under the VNU350 program of Ho Chi Minh City National University. According to this program, young scientists will be granted 1 type C scientific research topic (budget of 200 million VND) in the first 2 years; 1 type B topic (maximum budget of 1 billion VND) in the third year; 4th year they will be supported to invest in a laboratory for scientific research, with a maximum budget of 10 billion VND; 5th year they will be supported and guided in procedures and processes for recognition of meeting the standards for the title of Associate Professor at the State level.

For leading scientists, in the first 2 years, they will be granted a type B scientific research project (maximum budget of 1 billion VND). In the following years, they will be supported to invest in laboratories for scientific research, with a maximum budget of 30 billion VND; they will be supported to establish strong research groups and register to preside over projects at all levels. In addition to the above benefits, they will receive salaries and bonuses according to regulations.

12 more foreign professors and associate professors come to give guest lectures

12 professors and associate professors from universities around the world will participate in the visiting professor program of Ho Chi Minh City National University. They are outstanding scientists and experts from many of the world's leading universities and research institutes such as Oxford, Harvard, Tohoku, KU Leuven, Sydney, Tours, Sains Malaysia, as well as institutes, technology companies and advanced laboratories in the UK, USA, Japan, France, Belgium, Germany, Malaysia and Australia.

These researchers will participate in teaching and research at member units under Ho Chi Minh City National University such as University of Technology, University of Natural Sciences, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, University of Health Sciences, An Giang University and Institute of Nanotechnology.

There are many outstanding professors such as: Professor Sarosh R. Irani is working at Oxford University (UK) and Mayo Clinic (USA), specializing in immunology, clinical neurology, neuroscience, autoimmunity and physiology;

Professor Emilie Allard Vannier – University of Tours (France), specializing in pharmacy and drug formulation;

Associate Professor Matthew Erlich and Dr. Galina Gheihman – from Harvard Medical School (USA) specializing in the field of internal medicine and medical education;

Associate Professor Tran Hoang Nguyen – computer science expert from the University of Sydney (Australia);

Associate Professor Fujita Daisuke – Saga University (Japan), research on genetics and molecular biology in agriculture;

Dr. Tran Van Xuan - expert in artificial intelligence, digital transformation and industry 4.0/5.0, nuclear engineering and simulation modeling, currently working at EDF EPR Engineering Company (UK).

The visiting professors' areas of expertise range from artificial intelligence, bioengineering, nanotechnology, geoengineering, theology, to immunology, molecular biology, medicine, and metal oxide materials.

The Ho Chi Minh City National University's visiting professor program aims to connect global intellectuals, strengthen international cooperation, and improve the quality of training and research. Ho Chi Minh City National University is determined to invite 100 people to be appointed as visiting professors for 5 years. Invitees must sign a 5-year working contract at Ho Chi Minh City National University or at least 1 year, then continue to renew. In the immediate future, in 2025 and 2026, this unit plans to invite and appoint 50 people.

Visiting professors only need to work directly at VNU-HCM for 10 days, the rest of the time they work remotely. They will be appointed by the Director of VNU-HCM, supported with legal procedures, visas, immigration procedures, travel expenses, accommodation expenses during the working period, and receive competitive remuneration based on teaching hours, co-directed research and other activities.
