7 things to look forward to at this year's Google I/O event

Google I/O is an opportunity for the search giant to introduce major updates to software, artificial intelligence (AI), and sometimes even hardware.

This year, Google I/O 2025 promises to bring a series of remarkable information related to the company's software ecosystem and core AI platform, especially Android 16 and a series of improvements revolving around Gemini AI. Below are 7 highlights expected to be announced at the event.

Google is currently focusing heavily on AI, and Gemini is a central platform in that strategy. At I/O 2025, the company is expected to share more about the benefits of AI as well as the popularity of Gemini in current products.

While specifics are still unclear, Google is likely to introduce smarter versions of Gemini with notable new features, which could include the ability to convert images to videos – a feature that has appeared on Honor phones.

Ahead of the event, there was news that Gemini would be integrated into Google TV and Wear OS 6.

Google is said to be developing smart glasses using XR (Extended Reality) technology. Prototypes have been shown, but there are not many details.

At I/O 2025, Google and its partner Samsung will likely announce the details of the glasses – which are said to be a competitor to Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. At the same time, a more advanced XR device called Project Moohan may also be introduced.

In parallel with Gemini, Google is also developing Project Astra - a new generation AI assistant capable of "seeing" the world and responding with voice, images, videos...

Some of Astra's features have been integrated into Gemini, but there are still many improvements in the works. Google's ultimate goal is to create an assistant that can handle any natural language request and respond instantly.

Android 16 has been in beta testing for months. Google has already announced a number of improvements, including a new interface, ahead of the event. However, at I/O 2025, users can expect more updates related to security, privacy, and apps like Gmail and Google Maps – apps that are usually held back for I/O announcements.

Wear OS 6 was partially revealed with the new Material 3 Expressive interface and Gemini AI integration. This event could be an opportunity for Google to show off the operating system in action and announce an official release date.

With the new Pixel and Galaxy Watch lines expected to launch in July and August, Google needs to get the software ready for rollout soon.

Google may launch a new Pinterest-like platform at this year's I/O conference that will allow users to create photo collections from Google image search results and then share them with others.

If this information is correct, Google I/O 2025 will be the ideal stage to introduce a new social networking product – a field that Google has never succeeded in, but has not tried again for a long time.

Google Chrome – one of Google’s flagship products – will also be making an appearance at I/O with a developer preview of “What’s new in Chrome.” While there’s no word on a major update, expect a slew of small tweaks and performance improvements.

Notably, Gemini is currently only integrated into individual web applications, not yet in the Chrome browser. This could be Google's next step, if it wants to turn Chrome into an AI hub, although the company still has to be cautious due to issues related to exclusivity and cross-promotion of products.

Google I/O 2025 will be online and live-streamed across Google platforms. The opening keynote will be where most of the big announcements will be revealed.
