The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will not take any action against the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) until FIFA announces its final verdict on the naturalized players scandal, AFC Secretary General Datuk Seri Windsor John confirmed during a press conference on October 30.

According to Mr. Windsor, FIFA will first complete the process, including the results from the Appeal Committee or the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), and then transfer all relevant files and documents back to the AFC. At that time, the AFC Disciplinary Committee will review the details to determine the level of violation and appropriate disciplinary action.

“It all depends on the file that FIFA sends back. We will analyze the content carefully to determine what has been violated,” Mr. Windsor said.

The AFC official also stressed that it was only looking at the eligibility of the players, as the main issue was their eligibility to represent the national team, not the issue of naturalization in general. “FIFA is investigating from the eligibility perspective, and the AFC will follow that direction,” Mr. Windsor added.

Windsor said the AFC needed to complete the process before March 31, the end of the Asian Cup qualifiers, to ensure the draw process went smoothly. “After the last match, we have to know which teams have qualified for the tournament. So hopefully all decisions will be made before that time,” Windsor stressed.

According to Mr. Windsor, judicial procedures in football always take time, but the AFC will ensure every step is in accordance with regulations and fair to all parties.
