According to market research firm Counterpoint Research , one in three smartphones sold this year will be equipped with generative AI (Gen AI), bringing total estimated sales to 400 million units.
This rate is much higher than in 2024, when 5 smartphones sold have Gen AI.
“These features are becoming standard on high-end smartphones, and will rapidly expand to the mid-range segment from 2025,” said a report from Counterpoint Research .
Smartphone makers are likely to ramp up their Gen AI marketing in 2025. However, not all will benefit equally. Apple and Samsung are expected to dominate the early Gen AI smartphone market, thanks to their existing recognition in the premium segment and developed markets.
“Both brands are investing heavily in Gen AI with Apple Intelligence and Galaxy AI. They will continue to expand AI capabilities through regular software updates and phased deployments for new use cases in 2025,” said analysts from Counterpoint Research .
Not only the top smartphone lines, but also the companies are gradually bringing AI to the lower-end lines. Apple's latest iPhone model in the Vietnamese market, iPhone 16e, is emphasized by the company to promote AI features. Users can take advantage of most of the AI features like the Pro model, with the price for iPhone 16e starting at 17 million.

As AI-enabled smartphones become more popular, users are also getting used to the features available on their phones and taking advantage of them more effectively.
Sharing with Tri Thuc - Znews , content creator Nguyen Mai Chi (Chi Ka) said that she often applies the AI features available on the iPhone 16 device she is using. Among them, the feature to remove unwanted objects can bring unexpected effects. Not only does it remove unwanted people or objects, Mai Chi also removes wrinkles on pants and long dresses, making the photo look neater.
Meanwhile, Hoang Vu (3isou), who specializes in creating content about recruitment, human resources and office work, uses this feature to delete sensitive information in photos.
Another feature that Hoang Vu uses frequently is Audio Mix. On iPhone 16, this feature helps separate the speaker's sound and the surrounding environment with many options. Thanks to that, the video can have clearer, easier-to-hear sound without the need for a microphone.

Of course, AI is not the only factor that convinces users to upgrade their smartphones. Compared to smartphone models released 3-4 years ago, which is the time when users usually upgrade their phones, new devices often have much better performance and cameras, providing a better overall experience.
“The new phone has a much better camera, so I no longer need to borrow my family's phone to vlog,” Mai Chi shared.
In the iOS 18.4 update, Apple added Vietnamese to the virtual assistant Siri, allowing users to give some simple commands in Vietnamese. Mai Chi commented that this will be a useful addition when parents and the elderly use it.
On most new Android smartphones, manufacturers also integrate Gemini to handle features such as chatbots and respond to users. These are also ways to reduce technological barriers, making it easier for users to use.
From late 2026 or early 2027, Counterpoint Research believes that Gen AI could expand to mid-range smartphones, with more brands in the market.
In 2025, Agent AI is becoming a trend. This technology can soon be popular on smartphones, aiming to surpass Gen AI in terms of context recognition and AI task automation.
