A survey of eight countries found that almost no one could distinguish between AI-generated music and human-composed music, raising concerns about the future of creativity.

According to a survey published on November 12, distinguishing between music created by artificial intelligence (AI) and music composed by humans has become almost impossible for humans.

From October 6 to 10, Ipsos conducted a survey on the online music streaming platform Deezer (based in France) asking 9,000 people in Brazil, the UK, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands and the US to listen to 2 pieces of music created by AI and 1 piece of music composed by humans. The results showed that 97% of the participants could not distinguish between the 2 types of music.

In the survey, respondents were also asked about broader questions about the impact of AI. 51% of respondents said AI will lead to more low-quality music content on streaming platforms, and nearly 66% believe AI will diminish creativity.

Alexis Lanternier, CEO of Deezer, said the survey results clearly show that people care about music and want to know whether the tunes they are listening to are created by AI or humans.

The Deezer platform also revealed that not only does it upload a lot of AI-generated music to the platform, but these music pieces also attract a lot of listeners.

In January of this year, one in 10 tracks streamed daily was created entirely using AI. By October, however, that proportion had risen to more than 33%.

According to the survey, 80% of respondents also want AI-generated music to be labeled. Deezer is currently the only major music streaming platform that systematically labels content that is entirely AI-generated.

The issue of AI music came to the fore when the band The Velvet Sundown went viral on Spotify in June, and a month later it was revealed that the music was AI-generated. The AI group’s most popular song has been streamed more than 3 million times.

Spotify said it will encourage artists and publishers to sign a voluntary agreement on disclosure of the use of AI in music production.
