In late June 2025, we had the opportunity to visit Hoang Van Thu commune, Van Lang district, and were taken by commune officials to visit the exemplary economic model of Mr. Be Van Toan's family. Mr. Toan shared: "In 2004, I studied agricultural machinery repair at Lang Son Vocational School (now Lang Son Vocational College). After about two years of study, I graduated and spent more than 10 years working at agricultural machinery repair shops in Lang Son city. Although the job provided a fairly stable income, I always pondered and wished to return to my hometown to develop the economy."
With that in mind, in 2016, recognizing the growing demand in the commune for buying, selling, and repairing agricultural machinery, Mr. Toan boldly borrowed 50 million VND from the Social Policy Bank and used his accumulated capital to open a shop repairing agricultural machinery and selling additional items such as machinery, electrical appliances, and plumbing supplies. In addition, he also provides rental services for wedding tents and frames, resulting in a fairly stable income. On average, his family's shop generates approximately 100 million VND in revenue annually after deducting expenses.
Besides running his shop, with his keen business sense, in 2021, recognizing that local farmers produced a large quantity of agricultural products such as J02 rice, persimmons, and star anise, but lacked a purchasing center, he expanded his business to include purchasing agricultural products from farmers in the surrounding area. To store and preserve the produce, he invested in building a warehouse of approximately 1000 square meters with a roof and enclosed walls. Currently, his family purchases an average of over 100 tons of agricultural products annually from farmers at stable prices, depending on the type of product. Annual profits from purchasing and selling agricultural products are estimated at nearly 400 million VND.
Not stopping there, Mr. Toan also focused on investing in and caring for his family's 2 hectares of star anise trees. On average, his family harvests about 4 tons of star anise annually, with selling prices ranging from 20,000 to 35,000 VND/kg, bringing in an income of about 120 million VND. Along with star anise, his family is currently continuing to plant and care for over 2 hectares of eucalyptus trees. Thus, from this integrated economic model, Mr. Toan's family has a total income of about 620 million VND and creates seasonal jobs for 10 local laborers.
Ms. Hua Thi Thuan, Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Hoang Van Thu commune, said: "With a dynamic spirit and a thirst for learning, Mr. Toan has successfully built a comprehensive economic model, bringing in high income. Besides developing his family's economy, Mr. Toan is also very active in the association's activities and emulation movements launched by the village and commune, especially the new rural development movement. Furthermore, Mr. Toan is also the Director of the commune's Agricultural Cooperative. In this role, he is always proactive and enthusiastic, ready to act as a 'bridge' to bring scientific and technical advancements to the people; actively developing channels for purchasing and selling agricultural products, helping farmers find outlets for their products, thus allowing them to confidently develop production."
Thanks to his efforts in developing his family's economy, in January 2025, Mr. Toan was honored with a commendation from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for being a farmer with an effective economic development model, contributing to poverty alleviation and job creation for local workers.
