In late June 2025, we had the opportunity to work in Hoang Van Thu commune, Van Lang district and were taken by commune officials to visit the typical economic model of Mr. Be Van Toan's family. Mr. Toan shared: In 2004, I studied agricultural machinery repair at Lang Son Vocational School (now Lang Son Vocational College). After about 2 years of study, I graduated and spent more than 10 years working for hire at agricultural machinery repair shops in Lang Son city. Although the job had a fairly stable income, I always thought about it and wanted to return and develop the economy in my hometown.
With that in mind, in 2016, when he realized that the demand of local people for buying, selling and repairing agricultural machinery was increasing, Mr. Toan boldly borrowed 50 million VND from the Social Policy Bank and used the accumulated capital to open an agricultural machinery repair shop and sell additional machinery, electrical and water products... In addition, he also provided frame and wedding tent rental services, so he had a fairly stable source of income. On average, each year, his family's shop has a revenue of about 100 million VND after deducting expenses.
In addition to running a store, with a sharp mind, in 2021, realizing that agricultural products such as J02 rice, rose apple, star anise... produced by local people were abundant, with relatively large output, but there was no place to purchase them locally, he developed additional agricultural product purchasing activities for farmers in the surrounding area. Accordingly, in order to have a place to store and preserve agricultural products, he invested in and built a warehouse with an area of about 1000 m2 with a full roof, closed walls... Currently, on average, each year, his family purchases over 100 tons of agricultural products for local people at stable prices, depending on the type of agricultural product. The annual profit from purchasing and consuming agricultural products is estimated at nearly 400 million VND.
Not stopping there, Mr. Toan also focused on investing in taking care of his family's 2 hectares of star anise. On average, each year, his family harvests about 4 tons of star anise, with a selling price ranging from 20,000 - 35,000 VND/kg, bringing in an income of about 120 million VND. Along with star anise, his family is currently continuing to plant and take care of over 2 hectares of eucalyptus trees. Thus, from the integrated economic model, Mr. Toan's family has a total income of about 620 million VND and creates seasonal jobs for 10 local workers.
Ms. Hua Thi Thuan, President of the Farmers' Association of Hoang Van Thu Commune, said: With a dynamic and eager-to-learn spirit, Mr. Toan has successfully built a comprehensive economic model, bringing in high income. In addition to developing the family economy, Mr. Toan is also very active in participating in the activities of the association, emulation movements launched by the village and commune, especially the new rural construction movement. In addition, Mr. Toan is also the Director of the Agricultural Cooperative of the commune. In this role, he is always proactive, enthusiastic, ready to become a "bridge" to bring scientific and technical advances to the people; actively develop channels for purchasing and consuming agricultural products, helping people have outlets for their products, thereby feeling secure in developing production.
Thanks to his efforts in developing the family economy, in January 2025, Mr. Toan was honored to receive a certificate of merit from the Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee for being a farmer with an effective economic development model, contributing to hunger eradication, poverty reduction and job creation for local workers.
