According to Navy News , the multinational exercise named Bersama Shield 25, conducted under the framework of the Five Power Defense Arrangements (FPDA) - including Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the UK - brings together land, sea and air forces.

The Spey, along with warships from Australia, Singapore and Malaysia, was commanded by Captain Mohd Effendy bin Shuib of the Royal Malaysian Navy. The exercise included maritime surveillance, simulated air and surface threats, ship approach drills and artillery drills.
British gunners from 148 Battery, 29 Commando Regiment, Royal Artillery assisted in identifying targets, while the Spey's anti-aircraft crew worked with HMAS Sydney to coordinate allied air operations, including fighter strikes.
Stressing the importance of cohesion in dealing with the “complex maritime challenges of our time,” Colonel Effendy also affirmed: “These shared experiences will build stronger armed forces and create deeper friendship and trust between nations.”
Meanwhile, the commanding officer of the Spey, Captain Paul Caddy, said: "FPDA has been the foundation of the UK's enduring commitment to regional peace, security and stability over the past five decades. Our ability to meet current and future challenges requires us to continually develop and enhance our operational capabilities and cooperation."
China recently voiced its objections to British ships exercising freedom of navigation in the area.
