Passengers increase, drivers still fear traffic jams
According to many customers, calling a car during morning and afternoon rush hours in the central area of Ho Chi Minh City on the days leading up to the April 30 and May 1 holidays is often very slow.
Ms. Trinh Huong (25 years old, living in Thu Duc, Ho Chi Minh City) said that every evening, drivers are slow to accept trips, and fares increase sharply for all transportation services compared to the time of day.
Yesterday afternoon, April 25, she took advantage of getting home from work early to book a car to the city center for her young child to see the atmosphere of the parade preparation. But even though she turned on both Grab and Be, she waited 15 minutes but still no car accepted the trip.
"The fare is over 200,000 VND, twice as high as usual, but no car is willing to go to the center. Maybe the driver is afraid of traffic jams and road closures," said Ms. Huong.
She said the reason she chose a ride-hailing service was because "it's convenient and you don't have to worry about finding a parking space when the main roads are limited in vehicles." However, she couldn't book a ride, so she had to change her plan to take her child to another time.
According to observations, during peak hours in the morning and evening, fares for some routes to the center of Ho Chi Minh City via applications can increase by 20 - 50%, depending on the level of traffic congestion and the number of drivers operating in the area.
Some drivers said they were concerned that the severe traffic jams and long waiting times made each trip "not worth the effort" as it took a long time to get out of the traffic jam, and they didn't get any extra money.
Therefore, drivers "invite each other" on social networking groups to "avoid the center", prioritize driving in outlying districts and pick up passengers from far away.
Not only are prices rising, travel times are also longer as many routes are closed or restricted. Ride-hailing apps are forced to adjust routes in real time, making actual journeys longer than usual.

According to records, ride-hailing companies such as Be and Grab have prepared plans to serve people during the peak holiday season, especially on April 30 and May 1, when many activities such as military parades, marches, and fireworks will take place in the central area of Ho Chi Minh City to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day.
A representative of the Be app said that the unit has set up 10 fixed pick-up and drop-off points around the parade area. Users just need to open the app, type "April 30th parade" to be able to choose locations such as Le Van Tam Park, City Theater, Ben Thanh Market, Phu Dong intersection... to book a car.
Along with that, Be launched discount codes such as "phaohoa" 50% off on April 26, or "thongnhat" 50% off from April 22 to May 5 to encourage users.
Grab also integrates the search keyword "parade", allowing customers to choose pick-up and drop-off points similar to Be. In addition, Grab supports suggesting alternative routes if the road is closed, avoiding the situation of cars being stuck between the crowd and the security fence.
To avoid not being able to book a car or having to pay high fares, technology car companies recommend that people proactively plan early and monitor traffic information to choose the right route.
In addition, passengers should also choose a pick-up point on the edge of the restricted area and accept a short walk to arrive at the event on time.
