Vision Pro, once expected to be a breakthrough product, marking an important technological step forward for Apple, has faced the "death sentence" less than a year after its launch.
According to multiple sources, Apple discontinued the Vision Pro virtual reality glasses late last year due to excessive inventory. The main reason is said to be due to poor sales and dissatisfaction from users.
Apple Vision Pro virtual reality glasses sales less than 500,000 units shipped |
Specifically, Vision Pro sales were not as expected with less than 500,000 units shipped and the sky-high starting price of up to 3,499 USD made this product quickly lose its appeal.
Despite its advanced technology, the high price tag and lack of truly engaging apps and games have kept the Vision Pro from winning over users. Many have even returned the device after experiencing problems such as headaches, eye strain, neck pain, and lightheadedness.
Apple has also attempted to improve the Vision Pro with future updates, such as adding a virtual ultrawide display to improve productivity, or partnering with ResMed to develop a $120 stress-relieving strap. But these changes seem to have come too late to salvage the product’s initial appeal.
The Vision Pro virtual reality headset represents Apple's ambitions in mixed reality, but it's also a valuable lesson in balancing cutting-edge technology, practicality, and real-world consumer needs.
Currently, Apple is said to be focusing on developing a new, cheaper version of Vision Pro, expected to launch in late 2025. Whether the "Apple" can salvage its reputation with this product or not, the answer will be clear in the future.
