ASEAN adopts declaration on combating cross-border crime, finds strong enough 'sanctions'

Cross-border asset recovery will be the “key” to combating transnational crime within the ASEAN framework.

On September 15, in Bali, Indonesia, Chief Prosecutor of the Supreme People's Procuracy of Vietnam Nguyen Huy Tien and attorneys general from nine ASEAN member countries signed a joint statement to promote cooperation in tackling cross-border crimes.

The Sanur Bali Declaration was adopted at the ASEAN Attorney General's Meeting (APAGM) in Bali.

In the statement, ASEAN prosecutors pledged to coordinate more closely to tackle transnational crimes such as online gambling, fraud, corruption, money laundering and asset smuggling. cross-border

Speaking at the Conference, Indonesian Attorney General Sanitiar Burhanuddin said the Sanur Bali Declaration not only reflects a common commitment to fair law enforcement in ASEAN but also an effort to reduce crimes beyond the jurisdiction of each country.

Mr. Sanitiar stressed that cross-border asset recovery would be "key" to combating transnational crime and parties needed to coordinate and cooperate effectively while still respecting the national legal system.

APAGM will serve as a strategic forum to promote international legal cooperation, capacity building and information sharing among ASEAN prosecutors, in line with the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
