After many conferences, with funding from the Australian government , these 14 billboards were selected for information and illustrations by an Australian historian, Professor William Logan, and a group of experts on the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long.
These signs are also designed and manufactured in Australia with advanced technology, ensuring international quality, and can last for more than 20 years in harsh weather. This collaborative project was born to support the development of Vietnam tourism by improving access to information for tourists as well as improving the capacity of officials in charge of tourism and relics. The information on these signs is presented in both English and Vietnamese, combining information with images, introducing the most important parts of the World Cultural Heritage site of Thang Long Imperial Citadel to domestic and foreign visitors, thereby helping to increase awareness and understanding of this cultural and historical site. “I am delighted to witness the results of this cooperation project,” said Ambassador Borrowman. “The 1,000-year-old Thang Long Imperial Citadel is not only of great historical value but also an attractive destination for Vietnam. The fact that Australia and Vietnam can cooperate on such an important project demonstrates the deep friendship and trust that the two countries have for each other.” Mr. Le Hong Son, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, responded to Ambassador Borrowman: “We greatly appreciate this meaningful gift from Australia. These introductory signs will help people and tourists understand and appreciate this historical site better.” Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vietnam Dang Thi Bich Lien said: “The Australian Embassy in Vietnam sponsored the “Project to design signs and billboards for the World Cultural Heritage Area of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long-Hanoi” and has so far completed the design of 14 signs and billboards for visitors in the heritage area, with standards on language, specifications, and forms, suitable and meeting the standards for a World Heritage Site, which has contributed significantly to the work of propagating and promoting the outstanding global value of the heritage to domestic and international visitors”.
