US Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic presidential nomination and made a number of commitments.
Speaking at the closing night of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on the evening of August 22 (this morning, August 23, Vietnam time), US Vice President Kamala Harris announced that she accepted the nomination as the Democratic Party's presidential candidate for the US presidential election on November 5, according to AFP.

"On behalf of all whose stories can only be written in the greatest nation on earth, I accept your nomination for president of the United States. I will be a president who unites us around our highest aspirations," Harris said at the convention. A sea of fluttering American flags and chants of "USA" filled the stage as Democrats nominated Harris as their flagbearer, according to AFP. Harris pledged to be "a president for all Americans" as she reached out to undecided voters after one of the most shocking upheavals in US political history. In the same speech, Harris said she would complete the Gaza ceasefire and strongly support Ukraine, according to AFP. In the speech, Ms. Harris pledged to reform the "broken" US immigration system, while accusing her opponent in the upcoming election, former US President Donald Trump (78 years old), of planning to "pull our country back". Ms. Harris (60 years old) had the opportunity to become the Democratic presidential candidate more than a month ago when US President Joe Biden (82 years old) abandoned his re-election bid. If successful, Ms. Harris would make history as the first woman elected US President. Previously, speaking near the Mexican border fence built during his presidency in the battleground state of Arizona on August 22 (US time), Mr. Trump focused on the immigration issue that Republicans believe is Ms. Harris's major weakness, according to AFP. Telling stories of people he said had been killed by migrants crossing the border illegally, Mr Trump said: "When Kamala speaks at the convention tonight, she will not mention the victims. She will not even mention their names."
