From the land of a thousand years of civilization, the "Three Ready" movement quickly spread throughout the country and became a revolutionary climax of the youth, contributing to the historic and glorious victory of the nation.
Burning desire
In 1964, when the youth and people of the North were enthusiastically working and producing, determined to complete the first 5-year plan (1961-1965), build a socialist North and support the resistance of the people of the South, the US imperialists sent troops to attack the North of our country.
The task of the army and people in the North at this time was heavier and more difficult than ever: On the one hand, they had to directly confront the bombs and bullets of the American imperialists, protecting the North; on the other hand, they had to continue building socialism in the North, while ensuring support for the great frontline in the South. In that situation, patriotism and the spirit of national self-reliance and self-reliance of the youth rose. Participating in the fight against the Americans and saving the country became the earnest desire and burning desire of the youth of Hanoi at that time.
On the night of August 7, 1964, the Standing Committee of the Hanoi Youth Union held an extraordinary meeting and unanimously launched the "Three Readies" movement: Ready to fight; Ready to join the armed forces; Ready to go anywhere, do anything the Fatherland needs. On the evening of August 9, 1964, the movement was officially launched at the City Opera House Square. About 500 union members and more than 20,000 young people gathered on the streets, holding high the slogan "Three Readies".
Mr. Nguyen Cao Vang, former Permanent Vice President of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Veterans Association, who was then a youth of Viet Hung Commune (Dong Anh District), joined the crowd of people who eagerly and enthusiastically took to the streets to protest against the US. “When the Hanoi Youth Union called for the spirit of “Three readiness”, tens of thousands of young people shouted “Ready, ready, ready”. The atmosphere was extremely exciting. We only thought of one thing: Volunteering to go to battle, fighting off the American invaders, all for the front line, all for our beloved South”, Mr. Nguyen Cao Vang recalled.
Just one week later, 240,000 young people had signed up to join the movement, of which 80,000 volunteered to go to war.
Proud to be the first Hanoi youth to follow the call of the “Three Ready” movement, Mr. Han Tien Nham, former Vice President of the Hanoi City Association of Former Youth Volunteers, said: “Right after the “Three Ready” movement was launched, Hanoi announced the recruitment of youth volunteers to open Road 13C. This is the strategic traffic route from Yen Bai to Lao Cai , serving the fight against the US to save the country. At that time, I had just finished 10th grade (10-year system), and also decided to put down my pen and hit the road.”
Write a heroic song
The “Three Readies” movement was launched at the right time, developed strongly and went into depth, not only reaching all youths across the country, but also quickly going beyond the border, with many overseas students writing applications to return home to fight if the Fatherland needed them. At this time, the central task of the whole country was to do everything for the front line, to do everything to defeat the American invaders, so “Three Readies” included the tasks of fighting, producing, studying and building a life...
On June 21, 1965, the Prime Minister issued Directive 71, deciding to establish the Youth Volunteer Team to fight against the US and save the country. On July 11, 1965, the first Youth Volunteer Team to fight against the US and save the country in Hanoi was established by the Hanoi Youth Union. That was the Youth Volunteer Team N43.
Ms. Duong Thi Vin, Head of the Liaison Committee of the first Youth Volunteer Team to fight against the US and save the country in Hanoi, said: The N43 Youth Volunteer Team consists of 1,500 young people, organized into 7 companies, from 811 to 817. Most of the team members are very young, with an average age of 18-20, including workers, farmers, intellectuals, students, craftsmen, overseas Vietnamese, overseas Chinese, etc.
"There were children who were only 15-16 years old, just taking off their red scarves, like Nhu Hong Long, Nguyen Duy Tien, Dang Thi Phuong, To Ha... Some people increased their age, some wore extra clothes to gain weight. Many applications were written in blood in the hope of being called up soon. Some people who had just graduated refused to go to university or study abroad, like: Bui Hong Chau, Hoang Loc, Ngo Van Phon, Le Trong Lan... Or like Mrs. Hoang Kim Vinh, at 39 Hang Chieu Street, whose husband was fighting far away, she left her 2-year-old child with her old mother to go. Mr. Nguyen Van Tin and his wife, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Ty, who lived on Ma May Street, had just been married for a few days and had applied to join the army. The two sisters of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Minh Hai and Nguyen Thi Minh Hoat, who lived on Bach Mai Street; the two brothers of Mr. Nghiem Xuan The and Nghiem Xuan Hoa, who lived on Hoa Ma Street, Vietnamese expatriates who had just returned to the country; monk Dam Dan at Nam Du Pagoda (Thanh Tri)... all volunteered to go to war", Mrs. Duong Thi Vin recalled.
With the fervent spirit of the “Three Ready” movement, thousands of young men and women of the capital Hanoi followed their fathers and brothers to the front line of Zone 4. They were present on most of the arduous, fierce, and dangerous routes and key points of the three provinces of Nghe An, Ha Tinh, and Quang Binh, such as: Long Dai ferry, Khe Ve, Khe Tang, Road 7, Road 20 Quyet Thang…, with the main task of opening roads, filling bomb craters, and ensuring smooth traffic.
Living in the middle of the Truong Son mountain range, plowed by bombs and bullets, and living a life of hardship and deprivation, the Hanoi youth volunteers were never shaken, always determined to "Live by the bridge, by the road, and die bravely and steadfastly". A series of campaigns, emulation movements, and initiatives to improve tools, blast rocks, build bridges, build embankments, and defuse unexploded bombs... by union members and youth were launched enthusiastically in all units.
Mr. Do Quoc Phong, former Chairman of the Hanoi City Association of Former Youth Volunteers, said: The Hanoi Youth Volunteers were present on all front lines with the spirit of “Three readiness” and made outstanding achievements. There were more than 400 martyrs, more than 2,200 wounded soldiers and thousands of youth volunteers in the capital infected with Agent Orange... Many noble awards and titles that the Party and State have given to groups and individuals on the battlefields against the US to save the country have proven the special achievements of the capital's youth volunteer force during the period of fighting against the US to save the country.
From the passionate fire of the "Three Ready" movement, a generation of young people with good qualities, ready to sacrifice themselves for the Fatherland, was formed and went down in history. They fought side by side, selflessly with the "Five Volunteers" youth class from rural and urban areas to contribute to the complete liberation of the South and the reunification of the country.
With more than 5 million youth union members participating, of which nearly 1.5 million outstanding children have fallen and are resting in 265 cemeteries along the length of the country and tens of thousands of young people have left a part of their blood and bones on the fierce battlefield, it can be affirmed that the "Three Ready" movement since its inception has become a driving force, promoting patriotism of young people, creating conditions and an environment for each young person to be ready to contribute to the Fatherland.
The movement also contributed to the history of the whole nation and as an epic of Vietnamese youth in general, and the youth of the capital in particular, with the names: Martyr Bui Ngoc Duong, likened to La Van Cau in the resistance war against America; Martyr Dang Thuy Tram, a doctor, a young and enthusiastic soldier, rushing into the fiery battlefield; Hero Trinh To Tam, 53 times awarded the title "Brave American Destroyer"... and many other examples, have become typical models for a generation of heroic youth, nurtured by a heroic nation.
More than 60 years have passed, but the spirit of "Three readiness" still exists forever, contributing to encouraging and motivating, helping generations of young people today to live with ideals and aspirations, worthy of being the next generation to follow their fathers and brothers to preserve peace, build the country to be more and more decent and beautiful as wished by beloved Uncle Ho.
