Fresh colors
Although not as bustling as previous seasons, summer 2025 still recorded efforts from many art units to bring creative, quality products for young audiences. Notably, the musical “No Family” performed by the Youth Theater, adapted from the literary masterpiece of the same name by French writer Hector Malot, is featured.
“No Family” adapted by screenwriter Bui Hong Que and directed by Meritorious Artist Le Anh Tuyet, takes the audience on a journey of the boy Remi, with Vitalis’s bustling circus, meeting Mattia, Barberin’s mother, Lise... in a 19th century French village. “We want to tell a classic story in the language of musicals, so that children can enjoy interesting art and learn lessons about love, will to live and compassion,” Meritorious Artist Le Anh Tuyet expressed.
“No Family” is part of a series of performances for children by the Youth Theater called “Summer of Love 2025”. Accordingly, young audiences will also be able to enjoy previously popular plays such as “The Cat Who Taught the Seagull to Fly”, “The King Without a Throne”, “Elsa’s Dream”, “Zorba the Cat”, “The Goblin’s Child” this summer.
Also in the musical genre, the play “Chi Pheo’s Dream” by Thang Long Music and Dance Theater will come to the audience at Ho Guom Theater this June. The work is staged according to international Broadway musical standards, but has 100% Vietnamese elements, with the story inspired by the story “Chi Pheo” by writer Nam Cao; newly composed music ; acting, choreography, costumes, stage… all performed by Vietnamese people. Although it has won 8 awards at the 2024 National Music and Dance Festival, this performance still invested in upgrading the lighting and sound systems to bring a better quality experience to the audience.
The Vietnam Circus Federation presents the circus show “Nghêu - Sò - Ốc - Hến: You have to laugh even if you don’t want to”. The work was adapted from the script and directed by People’s Artist Tong Toan Thang. Still the same folk characters, familiar situations, but this time, they appear on stage with circus tricks of acrobatics, juggling, fruit tray dancing, magic, walking on steel wire, swinging on silk rope, along with geese, circus animals doing funny tricks, surely making children excited.
Vietnam Drama Theater brings back the play “The Return of the Dragon” with an interesting story inspired by the famous comic series “Dragon Ball”. The play takes the audience on a journey to find the dragon balls with “half-laughing, half-crying” situations. The attractive factor is the combination of a funny, entertaining script, sparkling stage effects, and charming performances by talented artists under the direction of People’s Artist Tu Long…
Find ways to “keep the fire burning”
Summer is the time when the demand for enjoying art and entertainment is high, especially among children. However, the 2025 summer stage is less exciting than previous seasons. The number of new works has decreased significantly, in particular, many art units that used to be active are absent. There are many reasons, but People's Artist Trung Hieu, Director of the Hanoi Drama Theater, commented that, besides competition with modern forms of entertainment, the biggest obstacle is the scarcity of new and good scripts for children. "Currently, stage programs for children do not have a fixed weekly performance schedule or have very few, mainly focusing on International Children's Day or Mid-Autumn Festival, so children do not have the habit and do not proactively choose to go to the stage," People's Artist Trung Hieu expressed.
Another worrying thing is that recently, some organizations have taken advantage of the reputation of major art units to attract audiences to their programs. Most recently, Le Son Performing Arts Company Limited organized a performance program using some images of the Vietnam Circus Federation for advertising. The Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports has intervened in the case, working with the two units to clarify the signs of violations. Le Son Performing Arts Company Limited admitted to illegally using images copyrighted by the Vietnam Circus Federation. They committed to removing all of those images from the program's promotion.
However, according to People's Artist Tran Manh Cuong, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Circus Federation, such forgeries not only cause economic losses, but also negatively affect the image of the official stage. Children - a sensitive and easily influenced audience - will lose confidence if their artistic experience is turned into a scam.
Despite many difficulties, the 2025 summer stage still shows remarkable efforts in "keeping the fire burning" with young audiences, sowing the "seeds" of art in young souls.
