On May 21 and 22, nearly 60 grade 7 students from the International School of North America (SNA) had a field trip to the Da Phuoc Waste Treatment Complex (Binh Chanh District, Ho Chi Minh City) belonging to the Vietnam Waste Treatment Company Limited - VWS. This activity is part of an experiential program to raise awareness of environmental protection among students.

Here, the students were directly introduced by Mr. Kevin Moore - CEO of VWS to the modern waste treatment process, including the leachate treatment system, the gas power generation and collection plant, the recycling and compost production area. Currently, this complex processes about 6,000-7,000 tons of waste per day, accounting for about 70% of the total household waste in Ho Chi Minh City.

For the first time, students were able to visit a leachate treatment plant, a compost plant, a power plant that collects gas from landfills, etc. At each destination, the young people expressed their surprise and excitement when they saw with their own eyes the leachate after going through the treatment system, changing from black to colorless white like filtered water. The treated water will be used for watering plants, washing cars, washing roads, etc.

Huynh Anh Tuan said he was very happy and excited to visit VWS. Tuan said that the trip gave him a lot of useful knowledge about waste management and treatment, helping him have a more comprehensive view of human responsibility in protecting the environment. Similarly, Dao Quynh Chi also said she was very impressed with the cool green space. At the same time, she reminded herself to be more responsible in protecting the environment.

Mr. Dang Vinh Loi, the teacher in charge of the field trip at SNA School, said that the students will do exercises after the trip, focusing on the relationship between humans and nature. “This is the second time I have brought students here, and each time I am impressed by the scale and modern processing technology,” Mr. Loi shared.

Since the beginning of 2025, VWS has welcomed many delegations, especially domestic and international students, to learn about waste and wastewater treatment to raise awareness of environmental protection. This is part of the open communityeducation strategy that the company has proactively implemented for many years.

Established in 2005, Da Phuoc Waste Treatment Complex is one of the most modern waste treatment facilities in the country to date. VWS Company is invested by Mr. David Duong - an overseas Vietnamese in the US who always looks towards his homeland. From the beginning, VWS Company's criteria were modern waste treatment; environmental protection and ensuring the health of surrounding residents. Currently, the company receives an average of 6,000 - 6,500 tons of waste per day from Ho Chi Minh City, processed using American sanitary landfill technology.

In order to implement the policy of innovating waste treatment technology in Ho Chi Minh City to reduce the landfill rate, VWS Company is collaborating with domestic and foreign experts with the plan to build a waste incineration power plant. The capacity of the waste incineration power plant is expected to process about 3,000 tons of waste/day, this is the amount of waste remaining after sorting for recycling and making organic fertilizer. In addition, VWS Company is also implementing a project to compost waste and collect gas to generate electricity at the landfill site, which has begun operation and is being monitored by the technical department.
