Ms. Richa Rathore - a famous Indian weight loss coach and collagen expert said, if you are stressed, have a pot belly, round face, or are easily overstimulated and need to take a nap every day because of staying up late... or even in a state of waking up around 2-3 am and craving sugar and starch... This shows that your body is suffering from high cortisol levels and must supplement something to support healthy cortisol levels for weight loss and healing.
Cortisol, or the stress hormone, is important for many body functions, including metabolism, immune response, and stress regulation.
Dr Praveen Ramachandra – Consultant, Endocrinology and Human Metabolism at SPARSH Hospital, Bengaluru (India) – explains that cortisol is essential for life. However, if cortisol levels are high, it leads to weight gain and can be detrimental to a person’s health.
According to Dr. Praveen Ramachandra, whenever we are stressed, cortisol produced by the adrenal glands increases blood sugar for instant energy and enhances the brain's use of glucose.
While these actions are beneficial in acute stressful situations, chronic stress leads to prolonged cortisol release, which can cause a variety of health problems.
Dr. Ramachandra asserts that weight gain caused by cortisol levels is due to “the body redistributing fat.”
“Cortisol allows muscle tissue to be broken down to release amino acids for energy, reducing muscle mass and metabolic rate, which can lead to weight gain. This leads to fat storage, especially visceral fat around the abdomen and subcutaneous fat in the face,” Dr. Ramachandra analyzed.
The reason why high cortisol levels are harmful is explained by Dr. Ramachandra as it causes cardiovascular problems, metabolic syndrome such as insulin resistance, increases the risk of type 2 diabetes, weakens the immune system, reduces bone density and increases the risk of osteoporosis.
“It can also lead to mental health problems like anxiety, depression and cognitive impairment,” notes Dr. Ramachandra.
Experts recommend following certain lifestyle changes such as eating healthy foods, managing stress, engaging in physical activity for more than 30 minutes, and avoiding alcohol or caffeine, along with maintaining a good sleep schedule to control cortisol.
