Protect aquaculture areas during the rainy season

At this time, it is the rainy and flood season, the water level in the Da River reservoir is unstable, Thuan Chau district has implemented many solutions, actively guiding and supporting fish farmers in cages on the reservoir and fish ponds to implement safety measures during the rainy and flood season.

Every day, the family of Mr. Quàng Văn Hợp, Ban Xa village, Liệp Tè commune, goes down to the fish cage farming area to check. Mr. Hợp said: My family has 15 fish cages, mainly black and yellow catfish. This season has a lot of rain and floods, so I bought more materials to weld the steel frames, replace old and torn nets with new ones; clean the fish cages twice a day; regularly check the water pollution level for timely treatment.

Cage fish farming model of people in Liep Te commune, Thuan Chau district.

Established in 2016, up to now, Huoi Pan Cooperative, Muong Khieng Commune, Thuan Chau District has 15 members with 62 fish cages, earning over 1.2 billion VND/year. Many member households earn 50 - 200 million VND per year from cage fish farming. The cooperative's fish products are sold to traders from the lowlands who come to buy at Muong La boat dock. Every year before the rainy season, the members of the cooperative proactively reinforce the anchor ropes, check the cage nets to ensure they are secure and visit the cages regularly to promptly handle any problems that arise.

Mr. Vi Van Nghiem, Director of Huoi Pan Cooperative, Muong Khieng Commune, said: Through many years of experience in fish farming, to limit damage caused by storms, we do not place fish cages near streams and creeks; proactively stretch nets and cover fish cages to avoid wind; regularly adjust the depth of the cage to suit the water level. At the same time, provide adequate food to increase the resistance of the fish and regularly handle waste and leftover food in the cage to prevent the fish from getting sick.

Officials of Liep Te commune, Thuan Chau district instruct people on how to take care of farmed fish.

Currently, Thuan Chau district has 1,030 hectares of water surface of Son La hydroelectric reservoir. The output of aquaculture and exploitation of aquatic products in the first 6 months of the year reached more than 550 tons. People in the communes of Liep Te and Muong Khieng are maintaining 761 fish cages, with an estimated output of 76 tons/year; there are 2 aquaculture cooperatives in operation in the area. People in the whole district maintain 382 hectares of fish ponds. To proactively protect farmed fish during the flood season, the District People's Committee has issued a plan on natural disaster prevention during the flood season and a plan on responding to environmental changes in aquaculture during the flood season in 2025.

Mr. Ha Trung Thang, Vice Chairman of Thuan Chau District People's Committee, informed: The district has directed specialized agencies to coordinate with communes to actively propagate and mobilize people and cooperatives to implement methods to care for and protect farmed fish. Regularly update weather and flood situations to promptly respond. Advise people not to stay in guard huts, not to exploit or catch aquatic products during rainy and flood days... to protect farmed fish and ensure people's safety.

In addition, the district's specialized agencies also directly sent staff to the grassroots level to instruct cooperatives and people not to place fish cages near water sources; to proactively prevent diseases and take care of fish according to the "4 determinations" principle (determining quality, determining quantity, determining time and determining location). For cage fish farming, people are encouraged to harvest when the fish reach commercial size before flood warnings.

Check the cages, reinforce the anchor system, cage buoys and move to a place with a gentle flow, sheltered from the wind; use shields and tarpaulins to cover the front of the cage to reduce the flow directly into the cage, prevent solid objects and wood from damaging the cage and causing fish loss. Implement measures such as adding vitamins to fish feed, hanging lime bags in front of the flow to prevent and control diseases and increase fish resistance; adjust the stocking density and choose the right fish breed according to the season...

Households raising fish in cages in Liep Te commune, Thuan Chau district have reinforced their anchor ropes.

For fish ponds, instruct people to strengthen, repair and check pond banks, culvert banks, and overflow systems for ponds. Prepare nets, barriers, and bamboo stakes to place when water overflows or breaks banks to avoid loss of farmed fish. Clear the flow of rivers and ditches around the pond to facilitate drainage. Sprinkle lime to stabilize PH and reduce turbidity; fish ponds in low-lying areas are often affected by floods, so harvest in advance to avoid damage when floods occur. Adjust the amount of food when there is rain or weather changes to limit environmental pollution and avoid waste.

Proactively deploy response measures during the flood season, helping cage fish farmers and fish pond farmers in Thuan Chau district to feel secure in production to develop effective and sustainable aquaculture.
