The US-based global luggage storage company Radical Storage has just conducted a unique study when ranking the dirtiest and cleanest cities in the world . The "highlight" in the list is Italy when it "owns" 4 of the dirtiest cities in the top 10, including Rome, Florence, Milan and Verona, according to the New York Post .

In the US, Las Vegas ranked third in the list of urban pollution levels while New York City - famous for its many rats - ranked 12th, with a new nickname "the city that never cleans".

To dig deeper into these dirty cities, Radical Storage selected the top 100 cities in the world to rank and analyze based on Google reviews.

Radical Storage looked at 70,000 real-world online posts over the past year, focusing on terms like “clean” and “dirty” to gauge which cities were praised for their cleanliness and which were not. This was used to expose urban areas’ shortcomings, and each urban center was given a cleanliness score based on the percentage of negative reviews related to dirtiness. To ensure accuracy, Radical Storage excluded cities with fewer than 100 total reviews, eliminated dummy results like “not clean” and “not dirty,” and only counted reviews written in English.

As a result, the top result on the list is Budapest, Hungary, with “over 37.9% of reviews related to filth or poor maintenance,” according to Radical Storage.

The site attributes Budapest's dirtiness to the city's waste management struggling to keep up with the influx of tourists . Meanwhile, Rome, the "Eternal City," is near the bottom of the cleanliness rankings, with 35.7% of reviews mentioning dirt. There's an entire Reddit thread dedicated to the Italian capital's dirtiness. "I'm visiting Rome (from Ireland) for the third time in 20 years," one horrified visitor complained. "From what I've seen, the city is always dirty." They added, "Rome is a really beautiful city, but the garbage problem is absolutely horrible." The photo was accompanied by a dump-like pile of garbage in the city. In fact, the garbage problem is so bad that it's even attracting wild boars to feast on the easy-to-find items.

Behind the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas are many negative issues, especially waste.

As for America's Las Vegas, "Sin City" was the third dirtiest destination, with 31% of cleanliness-related reviews being negative – a problem they attributed to the high volume of tourists. "With 24-hour nightlife and a huge tourist turnover, it's perhaps no surprise that keeping the streets clean is a challenge," Radical Storage wrote. The gambling mecca's filth has also been criticized online. One TripAdvisor reviewer derided Las Vegas as a dangerous "dump" with "feces and urine everywhere, marijuana smoking in every building and on every street" and homeless people pestering tourists for money.

The remaining two dirtiest cities in the top 5 are Florence, also in Italy, and Paris, France.

Here is a list of the 10 dirtiest cities:

Budapest, Hungary (37.9% negative hygiene-related reviews); Rome, Italy (35.7%); Las Vegas, USA (35.7%); Florence, Italy (29.6%); Paris, France (28.2%); Milan, Italy (26.8%); Verona, Italy (26.2%); Frankfurt, Germany (24.6%); Brussels, Belgium (24.4%); Cairo, Egypt (23.6%).
