Through several winding alleys, we found the house of Nguyen Thanh Thuong, one of the poorest households in the area. Under the scorching summer sun, the old, dilapidated house became even hotter and more stuffy, but it was the “home” of two families living together.
While the host was looking for intact cups to pour water for the guests, Ms. Giang Thi Sao, Thuong's aunt, shared with us about her family's difficult situation.
Thuong's mother - Nguyen Thi Hang is a single mother with mental problems, so she often wanders, sometimes remembers, sometimes forgets. In 2016, Hang was abused and gave birth to Thuong, but because she is unable to work, the child was single-handedly cared for and raised by her grandparents.
Originally a lively and agile girl, Thuong's congenital heart disease has caused her to constantly struggle and cope with excruciating pain. Her elderly and sick grandparents only depend on a few fields of rice, so all of her medical expenses are sponsored and paid for by relatives, philanthropists and humanitarian organizations. After 3 times of receiving free heart surgery from the Provincial Children's Fund in coordination with other organizations, Thuong's health has gradually stabilized and she can go to school with her friends.
However, tragedy continued to befall the family when the maternal grandparents passed away two years ago, leaving the mother and daughter helpless and without support. Since then, the mother and daughter have been taken in by the family of the uncle and aunt and have lived together in the level 4 house that the grandparents left behind.
Speaking of this, Ms. Sao choked up because her family was also in a very difficult situation. She and her husband had a daughter over 3 years old but had a congenital heart disease, so she had to quit her job to stay home to take care of the child and take care of the family members. All the living expenses, food, and medicine were shouldered by her husband alone, so it was very difficult.
Currently, 2 families of 5 live in a house of only about 50 square meters, patched together and expanded everywhere. There are no valuable items or assets inside the house. The house was built in 1993 and is now in disrepair with peeling walls. In the summer, the sun shines through the cracks; in the winter, the wind blows cold and is especially unsafe during storms.
Understanding the hardships of her family, despite her young age, Thuong already knows how to help her aunt and uncle with housework and taking care of the baby. Her dream is to live in a solid, safe house before the storm season comes.
According to the local government representative, the situation of Thuong’s family is extremely difficult in the locality. This year, although the family is eligible for State funding to remove the temporary house, they dare not accept it because they do not have the resources to do so. Hopefully, through Vinh Phuc Newspaper, benefactors and readers will extend their helping hands to help Thuong’s family have a better life.
